Doesn’t it make sense to use Huntley this year? Next year bring in a JC back up QB and red shirt Huntley next year (assuming that Williams is doing well)? If Williams does not do well, bring in Huntley now and give him the experience.
Huntley will play next Thursday. He is our #2 QB. If Williams goes down, we will need Huntley. When we are up 40 points at halftime, Huntley will get a lot of playing time in the 4th quarter so his first game isn’t vs USC or UCLA.
He will then play in the fourth quarter vs BYU and SJSU and hopefully not again until next September.
Jason Shelley will be here next year. He will be another steal at QB, and he can back up Troy Williams and Tyler Huntley.
FWIW, Jason Shelley already had offers LAST YEAR (June of 2015) from Clemson, Nebraska, and Florida State. We beat out some very good teams to get him. Of course anything can happen now and signing day, but if he sticks with us we will be set at QB through at least 2020.
In his JR year last year he passed for 3716 yds, 39 TDs/8 ints, and rushed for 1661, 21 TDs. This is HS, but it is Texas (5A Div II, 14-2, State Runner-Up), so it is still very impressive. He will blow it up this year and turn some heads.
I heard that Jason Thompson, who is Chase Hansen’s back up at strong safety, was taking the emergency, third-string snaps at QB in practice. I’m not too worried about the situation. When was the last time that Utah used more than two QB’s in a season on a consistent basis? Yes, Chase Hansen got some garbage snaps at QB last year when we were destroying Oregon, but I doubt something like that will occur again.
At today’s press conference Kyle Whittingham said that Tyler Huntley will play. He also confirmed that Jason Thompson would be the emergency QB
