Help me understand the timeout after the PI on final drive

I was at the game, so don’t know what happened.

Utes get the P.I. call, ball gets moved to 2 yard line, then Utes take a timeout that they badly needed to save.

As soon as the timeout was announced by refs, Whitt goes bezerk. What happened??

That also seemed to let the Cal defense regroup. I say we score on that first play of timeout doesn’t happen.

It looked as if Whitt was telling the ref to call a time out when the ball was dead on the next play but called it right then.  I’ll post the final 2 minutes on youtube so we call all over analyze it.

No need to overanalyze.

Whitt clearly explained in the postgame interview that he did not call for a timeout but was instead trying to explain to the ref to look to him if the clock started running because he MAY want to call a timeout, but the ref didn’t hear him correctly because of the noise.
