I’m curious how others are feeling about the game we have upcoming. I have a few things:
    1) offensively can we put up points that can get us into the 30s? I’m not sure just because we have to run the ball to really do anything offensively since I don’t think Barnes can throw enough to score like that. JJ is playing hurt and Vaki needs to play D and shouldn’t play a whole ton on O this game. I don’t trust glover at all unfortunately so I’m nervous and anxious to see how we can score against granted a bad usc D. Might need to score on defense to win?
    2) usc pass game, I hope we can get to CW before he gets rid of the ball because miles battle and Vaughn have let some pretty big passes get behind them and thankfully a lot of them were drops. Not having bishop for a half doesn’t help at all.
    3) left tackle seems in flux with togiai and Fano switching and that adds to my first concern
    4) wounded animal at home, usc needs this one for the cfp and are coming off a loss. Not to mention we have a 3 game win streak on them and I would think most guys on their team had us circled first and foremost.
    5) I bring this up every time we’re in games like this and no one except a few seem to believe this is real or something but we are dreadful on the road against bowl teams let alone the ap top 25. Last win against a team in the top 25 on the road minus Covid year was 2018 against Stanford. This got downplayed against Oregon state this year and I’m pretty worried about it.
Anyway hoping for a win. This usc D still sucks but the offense is crazy good imo despite the ND game. I’m thinking we lose unless I hear thoughts that change my mind. Not expecting rising or kuithe to play either fwiw

Whit simply said Faaiu played better in practice and deserved a chance to play.

Fano did not play because he was banged up. Sounds like he could play this week.

Kump played but I think just to rest Faaiu – I’m pretty sure Fano (I swear I saw #55 and the participation report backs me up) started at LT but Togiai came in real quick and played there most the game

    Always appreciate the write-up.

So did Kump play (in Fano’s absence) with Faaiu taking over at center? Or did Kump get hurt or benched? I guess Maea is still unavailable/hurt.

The offense put up the best numbers of the season. Barnes played a good game.

Vaki had a great game and averaged over 10 yards per carry. Jackson played well too. Had a lot to do with the Oline.

The defense did great and forced two turnovers.

A lot of good things coming out the game Saturday.

USC has tons of talent and speed. We will have our hands full. We need to do a good job of taking care of the ball.

We didn’t do well on special teams including punting and a missed FG.

You are seeing some teams playing kids both ways. We want to get the ball in the hands of your best athletes. It is a tall order to play both ways. He said he doubts that he will do it with any other players this year.

The USC game always has lots of implications.

He was asked about Williams playing poorly at ND. He said they are looking close at that game.

He was asked about his secondary allowing receivers to be open. His response was that we lead the conference in pass efficiency. But, he admits they will be tested.

He was asked about legacy kids like Ellis and Barton. He said it helps to have that relationship and hopes to do more of that going forward.

The appeal of Bishop’s targeting was DENIED. They have a lot of confidence in Ritchie taking over.

It was out of necessity that we brought Vaki in to play. Vaki is explosive and fast.

Asked about Rising and Kuithe. Just waiting for approval. The possibility of a redshirt has not been investigated yet. It is a possibility that COULD happen. He thinks that it is a “slam dunk” that they could come back if they do not play this season. They CANNOT play at all this season if they are to come back next year.

USC’s offensive numbers are actually better than last season.

Can you afford to play Vaki on offense with Bishop out. Whitt said that it should not make a difference.

The guy who played center (forgot his name) deserved the start and did very well. Fano did not play because of an injury but could play this week.

Barnes knows the offense inside/out. He knows how to manage the offense. He needs to get the chunk plays down the field.

O’Toole played about 25 snaps and played great. He is excited to have both him and Fillinger back in the mix.

damn, you’re older than I am? and here I was thinking Spencer Fano was as old as a guy should ever have to be

Not much changed. I think season ending injuries get taken off. Elliss replaced Filinger as starter. Still hope he is back soon as well. Maea is listed as backup LG, so does that mean he may not be back yet or sticking with Kump at C? Spencer Fano is hurt too, right? We know QB is a lie. I hope Jackson is ‘better’ but guessing if it was an NFL injury report might be questionable or day to day. Hope Becker is back but probably won’t know until kickoff. Any other things stand out?

The way we list our 2-deep doesn’t help, but:
    WR-X: Parks, Simmons
WR-Z: Vele (just returned), McClain (injured)
    WR-R: Pittman (injured), Matthews
    LT: Fano (injured), Togiai
    LG: Bills, Harrison
OC: Maea (injured, could return soon), Faaiu (but isn’t Kump generally taking C duties? haven’t paid close enough attention)
    RG: Mokofisi, Kump
    RT: Laumea, Kaumatule
    TE-Y: Yassmin, Suguturaga
TE-U: Kuithe (injured, perhaps never plays), King
QB: Rising (injured, so lie he is #1), Johnson, Barnes (injured, unknown), Rose (injured, maybe can play soon?)
RB: Jackson (banged up), Glover, Bernard (out for season), Vincent (injured, probably long), Curry (something seems off), Freshman that probably aren’t picking up pass rush

So, yeah, 2 OL out so shuffled plus a bunch of injured ‘skilled’ position players makes us pretty vulnerable, even with ‘next man up’. Not like we are playing the 1’s with QB2. As many have mentioned, RB probably is the position that hurts us the most. I’d say OL is soon after (and the run game goes with those 2 position groups). THEN, QB.

I don’t have answers, but maybe we have to let Nate improvise more (not sure why we aren’t doing more RPO) or get into some short passing rhythm to Mikey, TEs, screens with occasional 20% chance down the field throws to the sideline. Then defenses can’t stack the box as much (we’ve faced some of the better defenses we’ll see), maybe we can get a RB or Nate going, etc. Set up the run with the pass instead of pass with 2 runs up the middle.

Let’s see who we did go to the portal for and how they are doing:
    – King (TE): caught a TD. Whit says he needs to gain weight to have more impact
    – Pittman (WR) been hurt last 3 games, so inconclusive so far but no one to throw to him anyway (also slotted as PR)
    – Allen (S) 1 tackle in limited play
    – Simmons (WR) I only remember a dropped ball
    – Becker (K) good, touchbacks, 3-4 FGs with 51 as long, but injured (warmups) for last 3 games
    – Battle (CB) been playing all right – 12 tackles, 3 pds
    – Fano (DE) stud, 3.5 sacks, 2 fumbles, but tore his ACL, gone for season
    – Damuni (LB) stud, 25 tackles (tied 3rd on team and only 3 behind leader)
    – Bernard (RB) I’m only counting him because he pulled out (usually leadership team has to vote him back in, but not sure on this one – I think it was blowback from TT). Off-field accident – out for season

Started the season with ‘deep RB room‘ with Jackson (now banged up), Glover, Bernard (out for season), Curry (2022 season ending injury, doesn’t seem same), Vincent (got hurt last game, Whit: ‘doesn’t look good for Fano or Vincent’), Randle (FR), Stanley (FR), Mitchell (FR). Maybe we should’ve got a stud RB in the portal ;).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the following who were either OFFENSIVE starters, expected starters or significant contributors all have missed time due to injuries:

    Cam
    Brandt
    Bernard
    JJ
    Curry
    Barnes
    Vele
    Pittman
    McClain
    Maea
    Fano

I’m not mathematician, BUT losing 11 key guys on various levels might cause an offense to struggle. But it’s probably coach speak that is dooming us.
