Fano and Elliss started I think. Whit said Van has had an illness and missed most of fall camp.
but Fano was called on the second false start against utah early on after Bills. and then he let someone through for a TFL a couple plays later.
he played well and also didn’t at times. he will be ok
we didn’t give up a sack the whole game?
Offense has way too many questions marks to say definitively what it will be.
Defense arguably it could improve and be even deeper. 3 starters and essentially Reid got hurt.
Special teams is locked in. Coverage is great.
I’m calling bull s**t on this post. He’s the best player on the line regarding technique. He played good and was spelled throughout the game, which was likely the plan going in for a True Freshman. His backup gave up a sack, a false start, and a hold (Fano also did a false start and a hold). He had some pancakes and was basically in lockdown in Pass Pro. He got blown up once on a stunt from a DT with a head of steam, but other than that, Utah is lucky he’s ready this soon. Florida was likely testing him, but I thought he passed the test.
he was put back in at some points i believe. i noticed a drive without him, then noticed him back in.
but he was getting bullied
I’m sure people noticed that Fano got yanked pretty soon after a few penalties. I still don’t know why he started in the first place, but I’m glad our backups are capable of great play. Hopefully Fano takes it seriously and continues to progress, as he certainly did struggle in his first game.
My thoughts on the game:
Offense:
* Couldn’t be happier with Lud’s decision to take a shot early. That was the play of the game, IMO.
* The offensive numbers were distorted by us getting up. BarnesJohnson had more to show, not really a need in this game.
* Gator D was cat-quick and disruptive.
* Vele throws a nice ball. Just a little more air under it…
* Double-tights and NJ’s feet helped us keep the run game credible.
Defense:
* UF used a TON of offensive shifts and movement. It never burned us, but we were misaligned on D a half dozen times. We’ll see how upcoming opponents use shifts, but we’ll get better. Defensively that game was a serious mental workout for our guys.
* Van Fillinger missed 90% of camp? He’s going to play on Sundays.
* Elliss epitomizes the attitude of this defense. Have fun, play to win.
* LB Sione Fotu #12 was really good for being thrown into the fire. DT Tevita Fotu #99 is doing his best to match Leki Fotu, at least in appearance.
* The Fano brothers are really good players. Logan made one of the 5 best defensive plays of the game.
* JT quietly had maybe his best game as a Ute, Vaughn got rooked by Pearsall… twice… but came back with a key pressure on Mertz on a corner blitz that resulted in him overthrowing Pearsall in the EZ.
Glad we have 2 extra days to shake off the celebration – we’ll need it to prep for Baylor.
The OL was fine, IMO. As far as regular starters, Kump was at center but he’s been a starter before at Guard and Tackle. Fano was being spelled by Togia, probably just a true freshman kind of pre-planned substitution scheme to break in the true freshman. Jaquinden wasn’t running violently in my opinion, and I think Nate Johnson should jet-sweep it himself every play until they stop it. Nate Johnson in the rollout run or pass option should happen more frequently until an opponent blows it up.
This provides an opportunity for a guy like Fano to take advantage.
