Topic: Weekly Rising interview
The interview was done last night and broadcast this morning on ESPN700.
He says he is still hopeful to play. It’s up to the doctors. He is working on conditioning.
He has done 11 on 11 reps. Some have suggested that he has only done 7 on 7 reps.
Mentally he is trying to not get too high or too low.
Everybody everywhere asks him if he is going to play. Sounds like he is getting tired of not having any privacy.
Bryson Barnes does a great job preparing and will be ready to go if needed.
He said Ludwig has been preparing him as if he was going to play.
Everyone on the team is excited. He is excited to have the top ESPN crew doing the game. Coming out of the tunnel at game time is a high that he can’t describe.
The offense is ready to roll and has their foot on the gas peddle.
He has a great amount of confidence in the starting Oline including Fano. He loves to watch him take defenders on. The line knows what they are doing.
When watching game films he tries to learn from other offenses who have success.
Doesn’t care about last year’s game at Florida. He just wants to go out there and move the ball.
He is anxious to learn when his season will be starting.
Bill Riley did way too much talking instead of listening. I want to hear from Cam.
They are trying to help out in Maui and want the fans to help too. It is very tragic there.
The season is here. We have never had an SEC team here in SLC before. We didn’t play well last year. It’s a big challenge for the Utes.
We still have a lot of guys who are questionable for Thursday night. We still don’t know who will be on the field Thursday.
Recruiting is the most important thing in college football. He said he has an excellent staff, not just the assistant coaches.
He will not elaborate on Kuithe or Rising. He said he does not know who will start at QB.
Defense looks good, but there are still some nagging injuries on that side of the ball. He feels they have good depth and will call on this depth on Thursday.
We are in a different place as a program than we were ten years ago. We have a national brand, but we are still a work in progress.
Mertz is a good player but much different player than we faced last season. Mertz will not run as much.
Florida’s two running backs are great and they have very talented wide receivers.
He feels better about scoring when inside 40 yards. A lot of that has to do with kicking. The punting is getting better.
No one knows who will start at QB. Nate has looked good. You will see Nate play for sure in this game. Cam can pass and run, Barnes is a good passer and Nate is a runner. Barnes and Johnson are very different.
Fano will start at left tackle. He has put on weight and holds his own against the number 1 D.
Most of the guys are much more experienced this year.
Glover is one of the most improved players in the RB room.
JJ is much more comfortable and confident than he was last season. He has a natural ability to run the ball. He has learned to block and receive better.
There are pros and cons to playing a top team in game one. It has the players attention and everyone is focused. Will not be able to get some younger players reps.
He feels that this is one of the top two or three teams in his coaching career. He mentioned the 2008 team.
He doesn’t think that the new clock rules will change our approach.
We had 29 missed tackles last year against Florida. Some of that is to be expected against a talented team. They have spent more time tackling in fall camp.
They got a new defensive lineman on campus about a week ago. He won’t play immediately but should contribute this year. (I didn’t catch the name.)
It is a bit scary to me that he said there are so many players with nagging injuries.
Fall camp was productive but we had too many “soft tissue” type injuries. He hopes to have most players back for the game next week.
They have a blueprint they use to get the right number of reps for the starter without risking injuries. In the old days they practiced more and hit more. It is really watered down in comparison. There are no two-a-days, etc. There are a lot of new rules when it comes to practice. BUT – the off-season conditioning is much better and every player is here working out during June and July.
The Utes have 44 new players on the roster out of 125 players. They have never had as many new players. The high in the past may have been 35 or so.
The players are focused and looking towards a three-peat which has not been done in the PAC12.
He sad that the PAC 8-10-12 is basically gone. He is happy that they have a landing spot next year. The demise was all about money. Ultimately there will be two super conferences that will break away from the NCAA.
He has not heard how the divisions/pods will be set up the Big 12. He wants the power leagues to all have the same amount of conference games.
QB – Nate Johnson has really come on the last ten days. Johnson and Barnes in a dead heat for QB2. They have not given up on Cam. They will decide on Johnson and Barnes by Friday. The medical staff will decide if Cam can play. It is not Cam’s decision.
The game is starting to slow down for Nate Johnson. He has great running ability and is making better decisions. His completion % is getting better. He has become an excellent student of the game. Nate’s running ability is much like Richardson. Nate is very elusive. He is not a pocket guy. When he plays he will probably run a dozen times a game.
Barnes is very confident, knows the system, and has proven himself.
Oline – We have a solid 2deep. They will release the names on Friday. They even have more than 10 guys who are looking good.
Fano was named on the True Freshman All-American.
Other freshman looking good – Mikey Matthews, Smith Snowden, Logan Fano.
He thinks that with Cam – this team is the best team he has ever had, but they have to prove it.
Cam has been very involved in camp and helping coach the young guys.
Newcomers (non freshman) making a difference – Pittman and Simmons will see a lot of action. King is looking good but needs to add weight.
Damuni is looking good. They will play three linebackers in run situations.
Becker is looking good and consistent. His shortest kick in practice this week was 5 yards into the endzone.
Florida has SEC talent, speed and size. The QB is a pocket guy. They have two very good RBs. They are replacing 3 Olinemen.
New D coordinator. We will see a very good team.
Florida has not left Florida for an opener since 1991.
We need to get the fans in the stadium early next Thursday. Herby and Fowler will be there.
Cole Bishop
You can tell he comes form the south.
Camp was physical and a grinder. More tackling in practice this week. He said they tackled poorly last year at Florida.
AR was hard to bring down last year.
The defense has a lot of depth this year. He feels they have more talent than the last 2 years.
Vaki and Bishop have a close relationship on and off the field. They have a ton of depth at safety. Maybe 3 deep.
The focus on defense for the Florida game is to stop the run.
Cam Rising
Cam says he feels good. Is waiting to get the blessing from the doctor. He wants to play and wishes he didn’t have to wait on the doctors to pass him.
He said he has been practicing but has not been cleared for contact.
Nate is feeling a lot more comfortable with the offense. He is relaxing some now.
The offense is tight and they are all on the same page.
Florida is a great zone-pressure team. They have some complicated looks on third down.
Just got back from golf in time to hear his weekly interview.
Mertz is trying to do a reboot of his career. He has had 31 TDs and 26 interceptions.
Bartle thinks that Mertz will fit in with what Napier is trying to do. He feels that Napier will be a run-first guy. How well FL performs will depend on how the retooled offensive line does. (Riley said that Florida has to be able to run the ball to be successful.) They only have one WR with more than ten catches.
If Cam doesn’t play, Jackson and Bernard will be running a lot. There will be some read-option type of plays. Barnes can run the ball and is faster than Cam.
The coaches have a lot of confidence in the offensive line. Bartle is hearing good things about Mokofisi. He has become more physical and nastier.
Spencer Fano is doing everything that is being asked of him. Bartle feels Fano will start, but regardless he will get some playing time. (Riley points out how significant it is to have a true freshman start at left tackle.) Fano has added weight and muscle. There are a handful of other new guys who have impressed in fall camp. So, we should have some depth.
Utah would be the top-rated team (talent-wise) in the new Big 12 according to a national ranking. Bartle is very impressed with how the coaches have put this team together.
He felt that Isaac Wilson performed very well against Bishop Gorman last Friday night. He also felt that Garcia did great At offensive tackle. Kash Dillon was hurt and did not play.
No new timelines on possible recruits.
Topic: Cam Rising weekly interview
Notes from the Cam Rising interview:
It’s starting to feel real. He is excited to get back on the field.
His assessment is – we are right where we need to be. “Trust the process!”
Camp is challenging, Whit is focussing on mental toughness.
Always have to reinstall the offense because there are new players. It’s good for the experienced players to be re-exposed to everything.
New faces that caught his eye: Matthews. Emery looks really good and his ability to get the ball. King is a freak of nature.
Spencer Fano is special. He is able to lock down good D-ends. Is excited to see how he develops.
Miles Battle looks really good. He has catch-up speed and range. He is tough to throw against. (He trusts Vele over any defender on the team.)
Smith Snowden is making plays and he thinks he will get some playing time early.
It is still Cam’s plan to play against Florida. He has to wait for what the doctor says. He sounds confident, but …
Barnes is throwing the ball a lot better and hitting the deep ball. Nate is a very good athlete and is making progress. He needs more reps and is paying his dues.
Starting Monday they will start prepping for Florida. Up until now, it has been implementing the packages.
He says that this defense is very good and deep. He did say that it is hard to compete with the 2019 D.
Tafuna can disrupt plays like no other. He is big and quick. He is glad he is on his side.
Florida does a good job of bringing pressure. We need to pick it up. They have been watching Southern Miss film because that is where the new D coordinator came from.
Last year they did a good job of route recognition. He feels that the Utes played poorly last year in Gainsville.
The team is focused on getting a third straight championship.
He will be doing everything he can to be ready to go.
School starts on Monday. He will be taking psychology classes. Wants to learn more about the mind. All of his classes are online.
Cam always sounds positive. I have no clue if he can really play or not. So, I don’t think we know more than we did before today.
