Topic: Crimson Club lunch recap
Whit didn’t say it as much, but Rising will not be ready for the Florida game (he did say 50/50, but it’s not happening. As a joke he asked everyone to pray for him to be ready). They are hoping he’s ready to roll for conference play. Said Barnes is the starter now, but Johnson has gained a lot of ground in the last few days.
Kuithe is also still recovering. I got the vibe recovery could be a while. Mentioned that Yassmin is much better, and is also impressed with Landen King at TE, a transfer from Auburn.
Kicking will be much improved. Punting will be better, and field goals will be noticeably better with Cole Becker coming in from Colorado.
Loves the O line. Said Spencer Fano will most likely start at right guard, the first true freshman that he can remember that will start on the o line. He’s high on Mikey Matthews at WR.
Said that the defense, top to bottom, is the strongest he has ever had. Believes Vaki and Bishop are the best safety tandem in the country. Very high on Logan Fano at DE, and the Damuni at LB.
Said that with the move to the BIG12 they’ll pull some resources from CA to have a larger presence in TX (but will still go after CA hard). While answering a question, he said at the begin of the spring recruiting cycle they have a list of about 1,500 prospects. That gets whittled down pretty quickly. They can then offer 80 of so official visits, and like to sign 30-35 players.
A lot of Florida fans seem to think they’ll dominate in the trenches based on the weight disparity seen below. I pulled this info from a tweet.
“Big size advantage in the trenches to FL.
Projected starters:
UF’s OL – averages 6’5” 325
Utah’s DL – averages 6’3” 285
UF + 40lbsUF’s DL – avg 6’5” 305
Utah’s OL – avg 6’4” 315
Utah +10lbs”There is something to be said about Utah’s DE’s generally being on the smaller side. Fano and Ellis are both 246. O’Toole was a bit undersized last year imo, but he seems to have put on some good weight to get to 251. Our heaviest DE is Van (6’4 260), and he’s the same size as what most people consider to be a good weight DE.
Here is PFF’s list of the best returning DE’s/Edge rushers in 2023:
Jared Verse (FSU): 6’4 260
Bralen Trice (Washington): 6’4 274
Chop Robinson (Penn State): 6’3 250
Dallas Turner (Alabama): 6’4 242 – important to note that he is listed as a LB, but I think he’s mainly a pass rusher. He is expected to be a 1-2 round draft pick, but he was also a 5 star talent, and draft experts think he is a bit undersized.
Mykel Williams (Georgia): 6’5 265
JT Tuimoloau (Ohio State): 6’4 270
Laiatu Latu (UCLA): 6’5 265
Brandon Dorlus (Oregon): 6’3 290
Gabriel Murphy (UCLA): 6’3 260
Princely Umanmielen (Florida): 6’5 254Average weight: 263
Excluding Dorlus and Turner: 262.25
Average of Utah’s 2-deep (Elliss, O’Toole, Fano, and Van): 250A 13 pound difference is quite large, and I’ve always wondered why we don’t get bigger DE’s, whether by the portal or HS. We did have Xavier Carlton, but we for some reason wanted to move him to DT. He’s doing well at cal as an outside LB/Edge, at 6’6 270. I still believe in our DE’s, but I do think there is merit to the belief that they are undersized.
Maybe I’m overthinking this?
Topic: A couple of thoughts
Landing Isaiah Garcia was / is obviously HUGE for the Utes and this current recruiting class.
Watching his commitment video and how they pointed out that if he remains the #1 ranked recruit in Utah at the end of the recruiting cycle, it’ll be the 3rd consecutive year Utah has gotten the state’s #1 recruit (Barton in ‘21 and Fano in ‘22)!
Getting the top recruits in state is HUGE and only bodes well to the future of the program.
Reminds me of when Big Rick really got things rolling in hoops. Utah started getting the top in state talent to stay home and the program went wild, all the way to the National Championship Game.
Hoping for a similar trajectory in football!!
Welcome to the family Isaiah Garcia!
Go Utes!!!

He could not care less about being picked third. He said that they will get some fuel out of that and Cam not being picked as at least an honorable mention.
Was excited that 6 guys got picked on the preseason PAC12 first team.
He said that this is the best/deepest offensive line he has had at Utah.
3 or 4 great recruiting years and great player development have led the Utes to where they are today.
Dumani will be a big asset for the Utes. He will be playing inside linebacker. Lander Barton looks like a Greek God.
We have gained more in the portal than we have lost.
We have upgraded our linebackers over the years but the Dline makes them look better. He said that the Dline is great and he wouldn’t trade his top 4 interior linemen with any other group in the country.
Van Fillinger is amazing and he expects Logan Fano to be excellent.
We have the toughest schedule in the PAC12 and maybe the toughest of all-time.
We are headed in the right direction with the TV contract and we should hear something soon.
PK said Ludwig is promoting JJ as a great player. Whitt said the biggest thing that happened with the team last year was changing JJ to RB. The RB room is excellent.
