If a team is really that dominant, then they’ll get an at-large bid.   If not, well they were “dominant” over a weaker set of opponents than the 68 best teams in the country.   What is at stake for the post-season is what makes those “mid-major” tournaments more interesting and relevant.  If you say, well this or that team is in, regardless, what’s the point of the tournament?  The regular season sets the seeding for the tournament and creates the resume for the NCAA tournament if they get a bid.  The team still gets to hang the banner for winning the regular season in their conference.
