The elements were always going to impact Canada‘s Concacaf World Cup Qualifier against Mexico on Tuesday, but the match looks set to be even icier than anticipated.
Leading up to kickoff (9:05 pm ET | OneSoccer, Paramount+), images have surfaced from Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, where the venue is covered in snow, with the temperature at kickoff reportedly set to feel like a frigid -17 degrees Celsius (+1 Fahrenheit).
That’s already led to a new nickname for the upcoming Octagonal bout, which has been dubbed “Iceteca” on social media – a play on Mexico’s home field of Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Canada is getting pretty good at this CONCACAF s**thousery thing.

Best part of the whole thing: Apparently Mexico asked the Canadian federation if they could practice in their indoor practice facility yesterday…Canada denied it because a youth girls team had already booked the facility. That’s right: Mexico’s national team got back-burnered by a girls rec team. You gotta love this CONCACAF crap.

Mexico team/fans upset about playing in sub-freezing weather and Costa Rica was upset a few cycles ago playing on a snow covered field in Colorado.

Having much of the qualifying take place in winter months is making things interesting this cycle.

But it is similar to when visiting teams play at Azteca at over 7000 ft or in humid conditions in Costa Rica.  Called home advantage.  US team had a rough time in swampy conditions last night in Jamaica, seemed to have no energy at all in the second half.
