ParticipantThrows the headset and chews ass instead of teaching. Kind of ridiculous especially since Oregon players are basically paid employees.

ParticipantIn light of recent events in our own football program, I have developed an entirely new (to me) perspective when it comes to coaching these young men. I don’t think it’s ever okay for a coach to come unglued on a player, unless they do something profoundly immoral, which isn’t likely to happen on the football field (and as such would not be a coach’s responsibility to deal with).
Football is a child’s game damn it. Just Life is far too short to be tearing other people down because of something that literally has no meaning beyond what players/coaches/fans feel about it.

ParticipantSome football players need a stern talking to to get the point across. Some, especially QB’s, need a more tactful approach. However, I do agree, this is not the way to get your point across.

ParticipantThat’s a situation that calls for some fire from the HC to really get the message across that what the player did was unacceptable, but he went overboard. Maybe he was playing it up a little for the boosters and fans to show them “I hold my players accountable!” I don’t know.
Kind of reminds me of Whit in his first year as HC going after a big time recruit freshman DB who later transferred to Florida. He gave up on a play against Air Force, just basically let the ball carrier run right passed him and didn’t pursue him to try to make the tackle. Whit met him at the sideline and followed him for several seconds yelling “What the hell was that?! You quit! You quit!” or something along those lines. Big difference was Whit was a first year HC and he has since learned not to embarrass a player like that.

ParticipantI don’t think I would be a very good coach. When I watch as a fan my solution is ride the pine son. Don’t think I would throw a fit.
To be fair Oregon was playing like dog s**t against quite possibly the worst team in the country.

ParticipantCristobal has always been a hothead. I doubt that will ever change.

ModeratorThe kid took it like a champ… I’ll give him that. I’ll bet he thinks twice before he does that again. Reminds me of Kaelin Clay after he dropped the ball before the goal line against Oregon. After that, he searched out the referee to literally hand him the ball after he scored.

ParticipantI liked the legendary Bill Walsh’s approach. Rather than yell and scream at a player he would go and chew out the player’s position coach. This did a couple of things. 1) It spared the player from being embarrassed and ridiculed in front of his teammates and sulking on the sidelines where they can allow it to take their head out of the game and not perform to their capabilities 2) it maintained a buffer zone between the head coach and the players, where players didn’t feel completely alienated 3) The player saw their position coach getting chewed out by his boss which made them feel terrible knowing it was their fault. Most players have great relationships with their position coaches and don’t want to see them in hot water. It gives the player more motivation to not let it happen again.
The position coaches hate this method but they’re big boys getting paid well. Ultimately it was highly effective at getting the intended message across while still being able to get the most out of the players which is what you want at the end of the day.
