Matt Wells fired at Texas Tech after 5-3 start and overall 13-17 record in west Texas. Hard to follow a Red Raider legend like Kingsbury, and blowing a lead to KSU at home was the final straw for Wells despite the winning record in 2021. OC Sonny Cumbie, former Red Raider backup QB was named interim.

Do you think Wells will end-up back in Utah somewhere?
Kingsbury was a Red Raider legend? Leach would have been if not for Craig James and his son. Kliff was fired for having a losing record his last 3 seasons and 4 of 6.
Oh yeah, lubbock still loves kliff even though coaching didn’t work out for him there. There’s still a lot of places around town named after him 😅
True, but fans of the parochial school don’t bring up Ty Detmer in every conversation now that he got run out of town as a coach. Scott Frost also lost his legend status at Nebraska.
Well, more so as a QB than coach. Perhaps the fans liked the idea of Kliff Kingsbury as a coach, and the Leach style of play he promoted, better than the W-L reality (don’t look now but he’s currently 7-0 with the Cardinals). Even with the losing record at TTech, he still had a lot of fan loyalty from his QB days. Wells was an outsider and they didn’t really give him a chance. First words out of TTech admin after the firing were something like, “We’re going after a TTech home-boy”.
Yuck. Firing the coach during a winning season? Seems like something a blue blood would do. TT is not a blue blood.
After reading all that Leach went through in Lubbock I don’t get a good vibe about the TTech administration. Maybe they were mostly butt hurt about losing to Texas, which didn’t seem so bad at the time, but looked worse after Texas got beat by Oklahoma in Dallas and (gasp) Oklahoma State in Austin.
