his introductory speech, wow!
I get why he was hired. He wont be here long, some bigger school will snatch up in 5 years.
Why do we always have this view point when something good happens? Maybe he sticks around and enjoys life here. It will be nice to have him for sure.
Arizona grad, grew up in California, worked at UCLA, spent 4 years in Tampa. Seems like everything points that way. Nothing wrong with that
Maybe he likes skiing.
Well most of the people I have met lately are fleeing California and Arizona for Utah. Always a trade off but now that Utah is a P12 school you get the pay benefits, lower cost of living, outdoor lifestyle that many enjoy in the west. Also in my viewpoint the microscope is much wider here. You have far more leeway from doing what you want with less pressure and an inept local media.
Yes. That is definitely an outdated mentality. Utah has the resources, commitment to excellence, great living environment, etc., to attract and keep high-quality candidates.
Now if we can get him to buy out a few of the ‘less desirable’ football games and put something interesting on the 2020-2025 schedules then we will be happier!
I love Utah. I love living here, but it’s not for everyone. Additionally, sports jobs tenure are becoming increasingly shorter. If Harlan leaves after a 4 year stint and leaves the U better than he found it and accepts a job at a higher profile school or his alma-mater, that’s fairly common in this business.
Spoke with a friend in the athletic department last night. She hasn’t sat down with Harlan 1 on 1 yet, but they did have an all-hands staff meeting with him yesterday. All she would say is “he’s saying all the right things”. She mentioned some staff within the office are on edge about their futures, but I think anyone who’s had a top management change at work can understand that feeling.
I’m ok with him leaving, if he improves the Utah Athletics program financially, his next gig is Pac12 Commissioner, and then does the same for us at the next level. That works for me. I’m down with that and I could see him being ok with that too.
