I am a football fan more than any sport by a long shot. I love Utah football and suffered through two 1-10 seasons in the 70s, but still loved it. We start yet another season, it will be in the low 80s and I will get a round of golf in before the game. It’s hard to beat that!!!
Let’s get this party started!!!! GO UTES!!!!
I suffered through those seasons as well, which explains a lot of the “baggage” I have regarding certain programs.
Growing up a Ute fan in the 80’s… was brutal. Our program was an afterthought. Funny though… all of those in-state rival asshats that gave me crap about our program back then don’t want to talk about football anymore with me. Weird how that happens.
F em.
I probably would not have made it thru the 80s if I had not first gone thru the late 50s and 60s. I always expected a flip to come again. Oddly, I don’t expect another flip, an occasional WTF upset yes but even that will not be anytime soon.
The only game I remember (I was at the game as an Army ROTC Cadet) from the 70s was the Utah win over BYU on November 20, 1978. Link
“Utah (5-6), who has lost 6-straight games to BYU, again finds themselves losing to the Coogs (7-2) by as many as 16 points. Under these circumstances, the Utes pulled together and pulled off one of their most memorable Holy War victories ever, and their last until 1988.”
I gathered a lot of baggage over the next 10+ years, but that game hooked me. I believe Coach Whittingham was a line backer, but not a starter at that game.
If I supporting continuing the series with BYU, its only to see them beat every year.
It’s Gameday!! Go Utes!!!

This is why I’m never confident going into the instate game. TDS, will pull a rabbit out of a hat at some point just like Utah beat them when they shouldn’t have.
