Minnesota Ute
ParticipantI get it, they are good but jeez Craig. Put your best players on the floor and let them try to work.
I want lawson, keanu, ezra, gabe and mike. Period

Utopia

D T
ParticipantLots of turnovers, but not all forced.
-
//r00t4Utes
ParticipantHey TO on the 1st possession coming out of the half, no one moving to help

ParticipantHouston is the worst possible matchup for this squad. Some of our turnovers have been unforced but man, Houston plays some D. They always do.

ParticipantHard to watch. We can’t compete with athletic teams. Basketball 101: don’t leave your feet when passing. Plus it’s not illegal to fake a pass and go back door. Either get it down low or put in 5 guys that can spread the court and drive. Make some adjustments!!
-
//r00t4Utes
ParticipantAusar has mini pump faked on every shot. He has yet to go up quickly. The pump fakes have just allowed the D to clamp downcause they know he won’t pass.

ParticipantThis was an expected loss, and no one has played very well, but my gawd.
On pace for a 30 turnover game in 40 minutes
HOU has scored more off of the Utes turnovers than the Utes have scored
HOU is shooting better and has more offensive rebounds
HOU had scored more points off of those offensive rebounds than the Utes have scored.
I get the subs trying to find a spark, but as gets said every game, seems like Smith has his bench favorites, and they get minutes no matter how poorly they play.
And I get the love people had for Erickson lost game but this is an example of why he’s limited and her doesn’t do well against teams like HOU but can against TDS. Not that anyone on the teams plays so that great on the Utes against high pressure defense.

Utah#1
ParticipantDon’t care if Houston is a top ranked team or not. Craig Smith doesn’t put a team on the floor and not be able to coach them to weather the storm. That’s why he should be let go after this season.
-
Kellso
ParticipantCan we reach 30 points in this game? We might end up with more turnovers than points. Wow!
-
//r00t4Utes
Participant5pts in the 2nd half so far….8min left

ParticipantTake Lovering out please. He is worthless tonight.

ParticipantYou can say that about everyone on the team

EagleMountainUte
ParticipantExciting highs and absolute dogs**t lows.
26 turnovers tells me you had no plan as a coach.
36 points? Yikes.-
TruckStopTerrors
ParticipantHe’s in over his head. Always has been.

The Miami Ute
ParticipantWatching this team leaves me dead inside. You know there are serious issues with your team if some middle-aged guy can predict the outcome as if he had a crystal ball in his hand. Utah is to Houston, Iowa State, Baylor, Texas Tech, fill in the blank what Florida A&M, Queens, Radford, etc.. are to Utah, a light snack before a meal. There’s no more damning statement to Smith’s inability to coach at his level than, four years into his tenure, see his team still get blown out continually in away games.
-
EagleMountainUte
ParticipantI didn’t even realize it has been four years.
-
-
Utopia
ParticipantHOU didn’t need to score a single point in the 2nd half to win (41-36).
-
The Miami Ute
Participant😆 🤣 😂 😹…what a Gong Show this program turns into whenever it plays a competent team.

Holladay Ute
Participant26 turnovers in a college basketball game. Ouch.

ParticipantNot a good sign when your 7 footer is out beyond the arc setting screens. Nobody on this team can get to the basket even being over played. No off ball screens to get some separation for your shooters or just passing. Houston was overplaying the passing lanes and not 1 back door. Our style plays in to their hands. They have more talent and athleticism but we should at least be somewhat competitive.

Utecity
Participant36 points? Craig smith should be fired for this performance alone. Yikes
-
The Miami Ute
ParticipantLast time I saw a score that low was in the Four Corners, pre-shot clock era.

D T
ParticipantRelax people….UH routinely embarrasses opponents like this, particularly at home where they’ve won 33 straight….They’re clearly a FF-caliber team & Top-10 ranked for a reason….ELITE team, particularly defensively, AND they haven’t lost since November.
Flush it & focus on BU at home….UH’s immediately forgotten about IF we can win this Saturday.
-
The Miami Ute
ParticipantDT, you sound like you’re suffering from Battered Fan Syndrome. There’s no excuse for not being competitive at all in four of the seven conference games Utah has played so far this season.
-
D T
Participant“Battered Fan Syndrome” — What??

Utes 69
Participant38 points total for a game, nice job smith
Utes should not be behind Utah St or byu in Basketball or football.
-
The Miami Ute
ParticipantEasier said than done. The shocking thing is that it seems like Utah State has a new head coach and roster every year and they still compete.
-
-
TheNuschler
ParticipantOn a side note, Branden Carlson would have been the 3rd leading scorer for the Utes tonight but he scored them for OKC against the Jazz, I guess those don’t count. Frankly, I had no idea he was actually on OKC and playing…

GameForAnyFuss
ParticipantI missed the game because I was working. Did we win? 😉

DataUte
ParticipantAfter BYU: Hey, we are ok (except for FT)! Smith is getting it together and better than KY Jelly
After Houston: We suck again! Fire Smith!-
The Miami Ute
ParticipantNow Data, if you follow traffic on this site, there were quite a few people that predicted the result versus Houston. I don’t think any serious Utah basketball fan is getting fooled anymore by Smith and the Utes.

ParticipantYeah that was hard to watch, but I agree with those that say that Houston is very good so not to read too much into last night. That said… Hofstra and Jackson State outscored us against Houston. They did beat TCU and OSU pretty handily too, but not nearly as bad as we got embarrassed.
My biggest issue with Craig, besides recruiting, is the constant subbing. I think against a super athletic aggressive team like Houston, it’s a mistake to think that fresh legs are the antidote. You are far better off, IMO, letting the players on the floor try to get acclimated to what Houston is doing and try, as much as possible, to slow down the pace and take care of the ball. It would be very interesting to see how many of each guy’s turnovers came one or two possessions into them coming off the bench. I observed, anecdotally, 4 or 5 times where someone came off the bench and immediately threw it away or had it swiped, but as much as he subs and as many turnovers as we had, it was probably a lot more and may be correlation not causation.
Interesting side note, but related, turnovers were incredibly balanced. Nobody had more than 4 and nobody had less than 2, other than Jake, Mason, & Keller that had no turnovers. Surprised Jake had none given his minutes, but mason and keller played limited and mostly garbage minutes against houston’s bench so not a huge surprise there.
Other interesting stats, Jake & Keanu are the only ones with significant GameScores (4.2 and 5.6 respectively), they plus Mason are also the only ones with good BPM (10.2, 9.2, 10.3 respectively). I’m not sure how much this says about Mason, but I think it continues to reinforce my feelings on Jake and Keanu.
While it was a bad game all the way around, I think Jake & Keanu continue to show why they should be playing. I don’t think you can get away from Lawson as he is our size, but not surprising that he was dominated by Houston. Mike was terrible, but then again, so were all our guards, and he only saw 11 minutes carved up among a handful of stretches so I refuse to read too much into his performance. Miro did nothing to prove he deserves minutes instead, beyond a couple of 3s, his defense was god awful. Similarly, Ezra, despite the big game against BYU isn’t really showing me anything in the 3 or 4 spot that Keanu and Jake don’t have covered better. Gabe continues to be our best option at guard even though he is so inconsistent from 3. Beyond him, I think you have Mike then Mason, and I don’t really see why Hunter or Miro should get much for minutes other than very situational.
Bottom line, to me is still: Gabe, Mike, Jake, Keanu, Lawson;
Bench Guards: Mason, Miro, then Hunter;
Bench Forward: Ezra, Caleb, Keller;
Keep this rotation so tight that Mason/Ezra get <10min; Miro/Caleb gets little/situational min and Hunter/Keller are desperation foul trouble.Of course, this deep in the season, in many ways the die is already cast.

ParticipantI think most on this site know or expected the MBB team to suck. The bright side is that there are actually teams that suck worse than us in this conference. TSPP just beat CU so maybe we can actually win a couple of more games this year.
-
Minnesota Ute
ParticipantYeah, we are firmly middle of the pack. I think the only question is whether we are bottom middle or middle-middle. We clearly don’t have the horses to be at the top of the conference even if RM was at the helm. I honestly think we could be top middle if Craig was a good coach. We could be in the mix with Baylor and West Virginia with the right coach. But with Craig and this team, our ceiling is probably 8th, but I’m hoping our floor is 13th.
