ParticipantHe is an amazing athlete. We need to figure out ways to use him to make our offense more productive.
Many years ago, when Mac was the head coach and Lusk was in the backfield, we played a game that we lost, and Lusk had less than 10 touches. Mac said in the postgame interview that we need to get him the ball. We did and had great success.
I assume Johnson will typically line up as a WR. I see him also lining up in the backfield on occasion, and I’m quite sure he will play wildcat QB when the situation is right.
As was the case with Lusk in the 90s, we need to get the ball in Johnson’s hands IMO. He is probably our best athlete on offense. I think we all know that he is not an every-down QB, but he is a Swiss army knife that can help our offense this season.

KeymasterI hate it when not utilizing Johnson to his fullest capabilities.

ParticipantI hate it when Utah utilizes “packages” for particular players that indicate precisely which play will be run making the defense completely prepared. Utah has done this a lot.
Please, please, please don’t be predictable in trying to get certain players enough touches. It does not work well.
Beck is supposed to be creative- I dearly hope so if they are going to work players in to certain types of plays.

Participant“Johnson”, “packages”, “hands”, “ball”
“ball in Johnson’s hands”
Hard to read all this with a straight face. Seems I am not the only immature person around here 🙂.

ParticipantMorgan Scalley said he was interested in the candidates for OC because they did things that made life hard for defenses. I am guessing/hoping that part of that is being a bit less obvious with play calling based on certain personnel (i.e. not calling the same gadget play every time Johnson is in the game).
Beck likes to run an option play where instead of pitching to a back for the final “option,” the QB throws to a WR standing at the line of scrimmage (like a quick WR screen). It seems to stretch teams even more than a standard speed-option. I’m guessing this could work very well with Johnson out there ready to rip up the sideline if the corner starts cheating inside to help contain Dampier.
How about that package?

ParticipantI like the wildcat with someone other than QB1 to lower exposure to QB1. I also like the wildcat with a creditable threat to pass. A productive wildcat option is a headache for defensive preparation. Nate in a sweep also becomes an RPO. Against a zone Nate can create matchup problems simply attacking LBers particularly as space increases. Nate very well may be one of our top options in space and we want several athletes that can get the ball in space. I am trying to remember how good Nate was going thru QB progressions but I remember him doing well running the ball in space. I think the WR room has to be very good to push Nate out of rotation, assuming he is reliable catching the ball.
