Here’s some stats I’ve compiled about the PAC-12 Championship Game and conference championships in general. Some might be common knowledge, others interesting, and some are just straight up weird.

Teams that score first in the PAC-12 Championship game are 6-1. That one loss came back in 2012 when Stanford beat UCLA. UCLA scored on the very first possession of the game for either team and eventually lost 27-24.

Teams from the North have won 6/7 games. As you probably remember, the first team from the South to win the title was USC when they did so last year.

The team that has had the most rushing attempts has won every single time.

The team ranked highest headed into the matchup has won all 7 times. Each time that team has been in the top 10, except for this year (Washington is only 11).

Starting freshman QB’s (true or redshirt) are 1-3. Senior QB’s are 1-1.

The team with the better offense has won 5/7 and the last 4 in a row. This year Utah is averaging 30.8 points per game while Washington is only averaging 28 points per game.

The team with the better defenese has won 5/7 times as well though. This year Washington is allowing 16.5 points per game while Utah is allowing 19.3.

In the last 5 years there have only been 2 Power 5 champions who’s scoring average is less than 30 points per game, Michigan State in 2015 and Michigan State in 2013 (29.8 and 29.4 ppg respectively).

The winner of the PAC-12 title has scored 30+ each year in the conference championship game except for Stanford in 2012 (27).

The winning team has made a field goal in 6/7 PAC-12 championship games.

This year the PAC-12 championship will feature a rematch from the regular season. This will be the 6th time that has happened. In 4 of the other 5 such matchups the team that won the regular season matchup has gone on to win the PAC-12 Championship. The exception was 2014 Oregon. Oregon had lost in Autzen to Arizona 31-24 earlier in the season, and then proceeded to dominate the Wildcats 51-13 in the conference championship game.

The team with more penalties has won 4 times.

In 5/7 championship games the winning team has converted on 4th down at least once in the game.

The average score of the PAC-12 championship game has been 39.7 – 20.3

Kinda fun to see some of the trends from the last couple of years, hopefully we see our boys come out on top on Friday! Go Utes!!

Those are really fun and seem to be favorable to Utah. Woohoo!
