Sitake said after his shut out loss to LSU that “it was the best defense I’ve ever seen in college football.”  Hmm.  LSU got trounced by Miss St 37-7 the next week, and let Syracuse amass 26 points against them yesterday.

We all know BYU’s offense is bad, but just how bad is it?

Ty “Freakin” Detmer is turning out to be a terrible offensive coordinator.  I think Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams masked a lot of issues last year.  It wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that Roderick would be a step up from what they have now.

So, back to the original question.  Is Sitake a good HC?  I’ve listened to a few post-game press conferences and he seems completely lost on how to fix his team.

He has a BYU team that isn’t good on offense or defense and fans are beginning to turn on him.

I wish I could say I felt bad for him, but I just don’t.

He was the same way at OSU. He threw players under the bus.

It amazes me how he escapes all criticism. The man is teflon.

He was good under Whitt. He’s been terrible everywhere else.

Even our defense got a lot better after he left.

Its looking more and more like he is overrated as a coach.

This is very true. And it seems to apply to both fan bases. Last year when we played them and there was the two targeting hits in a row, the second of which I believe knocked McCormick out of the game, there were still utah fans that were commending him for cleaning up the dirty play. Which is crazy considering what the reaction would have been if that were bronco out there reacting the way Kalani was after those hits.

And somehow their recruiting is on the rise even though I believe his classes have been worse than broncos. Although even our recruiting guys say there’s an improvement under kalani, so maybe there’s some truth to that I’m missing?

The teflon will start to degrade soon.  Not even Kalani will endure sub .500 seasons at BYU.  The fanbase is way too entitled.

I think he did contribute to a bump in BYU’s recruiting classes, but a lot of that was because they had a semi-successful first year (went 9-4) and there was some excitement surrounding the program because Kalani comes across as a likeable guy and they brought in their Heisman winning player to coach the offense.

I think there will be a substantial decrease in recruiting talent after this year.  The excitement is gone, they are going to go 0-4 against the P5 teams on their schedule and will likely drop a few against the mediocre G5.  That hurts recruiting…badly.

Gary Anderson told him in order for him to be taken seriously he had to get out of Whit’s shadow…it’s Whit’s defense and everyone knows it.  He left to join OSU…now Gary’s in big trouble.

He put in for the prestigious G5 jobs at UNLV and CSU and didn’t get a call back…

BYU mishandles the offer to Ken N. at Navy who pulls out and doesn’t have any other options but Kalani at that point.  Lipstick on a pig.

Very difficult to surround himself with quality assistants as well.  He’s gonna have a tough go…especially with the crazy expectations they have down there.

Internal culture issues, academic warning issues, recruiting decommit issues all on the horizon.

That said, they don’t have any other options based on the “HC being a temple recommend holder” issue.

He’s in some real trouble…probably in over his head.   Needed a win this year… not gonna beat us next year or the year after at a minimum.

Who hired Detmer? Sitake or Holmoe? Detmer, a mediocre Texas HS coach is now a mediocre to bad Indepentent coach.

I think Detmer was a condition of him being hired. I think the jury is still out on Kalani. He’s a first time head coach, so he will need some time to learn on the job. The fact of the matter is that BYU being forced to hire someone with no head coaching experience at any other level points to a refutation of their constant claim that they are at a P5 level. If you’re P5 you select from successful coaches at the G5 level. If you’re G5 you select from someone in house if the program is successful (Utah) or a successful FCS coach if you need to improve.

I agree that the jury is still out on Sitake as to whether or not he will succeed as a head coach.  The interesting thing is how bad his defenses has been at Oregon State and BYU.  I think there is a good amount of evidence that suggests Kalani isn’t that great of a defensive coach and that Whittingham was the mastermind behind his perceived success.

Utah’s defense seemed to improve when he left. His blitzes seem to be based off emotion. Coach Pease was more about gap assignment and moving to the ball. Glad Scalley got some mentoring from that guy.

I think he was good with Whitt and/or Gary backing him up. We’ll see how he does on his own, and this is a transition year for him.

No.  I’m not even sure he was a good Defensive Coordinator.

He may have simply been good at relaying what Whitt wanted the D to do.

He wasn’t even a good DC. But then I was never a Sitake guy. Nothing personal, I hear he’s a really gracious person, just never been impressed with his coaching abilities. We’re seeing it first hand right?!
