UtahParticipant
F**king pathetic.
As someone who is from Orlando…embarrassing.

I was getting a kick out of the LED signage they put up on the press box of their stadium “2017 National Champions” I knew they had proclaimed themselves national champs that year but I didn’t know how far they took it. Absolutely hilarious.

2008 National ChampParticipant
Alabama in 1941 would like a word:
One of the oddest claims to a national title has got to be Alabama’s of 1941. While there are a ton of claims from around the country that can be understood, this one is really just baffling.
The Crimson Tide finished the regular season at 8-2, ranked 20th in the AP Poll and third place in the SEC. Mississippi State not only beat Alabama in the regular season, finished with a better record and won the conference title, the Bulldogs were also ranked higher than Alabama.
So why do the Crimson Tide claim a share of the 1941 national championship when Minnesota is the only recognized champion and another SEC team was better that year? You’ll have to ask Alabama fans about that one.

Yes. We have a guy on here named 2008 National Champ that posts some pretty crazy, usually negative takes. That is the epitome of delusional and pathetic to be honest.

MotherJabubuParticipant
The 2008 NC claim was thrust upon Utah after the fact by people who aren’t Utah fans. Much different than a fanbase taking it upon themselves to make the claim

In 2018, the NCAA retroactively recognized the 2008 Utah football team with a “national poll championship.” That national poll championship comes regards of the Jeff Anderson/Chris Hester computer rankings, which following the conclusion of the season, determined Utah was the 2008 national champion. After the NCAA officially recognized the Utes as champions, the Pac-12 conference was quick to include Utah football on their official list of national champions as well.
Utah football 2008 national football champions? NCAA says yes
-
Ute DubParticipant
That’s misleading. The NCAA recognized that one of the 3 polls used to decide the National Champion had Utah as #1.
-

AlohaUteParticipant
It’s not pathetic at all, they should claim the title. And so should Utah for 2009. We Ute fans should have UCF’s back more than anyone as we know how it feels to get screwed, except for us it was twice, because of a crappy, unfair system.
I don’t know if it’s the case for UCF, but the NCAA actually recognizes Utah as co-Champions that season as two official selectors ranked Utah #1. If the NCAA recognizes it, so should we.

Let’s get some t shirts going.

Itacoatiara22Participant
Yuck. You can’t claim something that nobody recognizes. The NCAA crowned a champion and awarded them the national championship trophy. It’s not in SLC. Just makes anyone who claims differently look dumb.
-
2008 National ChampParticipant
The NCAA has never crowned a champion for its highest level of football. That has always been the province of 3rd parties whether the wire services, the coaches association, the BCS or the CFP.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
And that’s why reputable sources always refer to them as “mythical national championships.”
-
2008 National ChampParticipant
And it’s why any claim supported by a poll or ranking is as valid as any other. Just because the AP and Coach’s polls have been around longer doesn’t make them better. For years, the coaches in the Coach’s poll handed over their votes to someone else in their athletic department, usually a staffer. And reporters have been notorious for favoring the teams they cover regularly or the conference their local team is in. Not to mention that the polls are by nature confirmation bias instead of achievement.

Go read this about the Natty’s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football_national_championships_in_NCAA_Division_I_FBS?wprov=sfla1Look at the list for National Champions, Utah is listed with Florida for 2008. Why? Because two major selectors recognized by the NCAA had Utah #1.
All ignoring that does is continuing to perpetuate the unfairness of the system and legitimizing BS like the BCS.
-
2008 National ChampParticipant
don’t you dare try to take delusional and pathetic away from me. I want that on my tombstone

-
Itacoatiara22Participant
I can’t believe people are debating this in our fanbase. I loved those 2004 and 2008 teams, but they neither were national champions. It’s just tacky to claim 2008.
-
2008 National ChampParticipant
it’s always cute when people get proven wrong and then claim the debate they engaged in was beneath them
-
AlohaUteParticipant
Except they did win it according to two major selectors recognized by the NCAA. So you are factually wrong.
-
-
JackParticipant
The NCAA doesn’t recognize a champ in the FBS, because there has never been a real playoff system in place.
UCF claiming a title is no less fantastical than anyone claiming they are a champ when no real playoff exists.
-
ironman1315Participant
Yes. BYU claiming to be regular season co champs this year.

Ute fans with PAC 12 tattoos and car wraps 😉
There is a guy in my area in my neighborhood in Herriman with a Dodge Charger wrapped in a Ute logo and a massive PAC 12 logo. I always chuckle
-
RoboUteParticipant
I never noticed the PAC 12 logo being overly present anywhere until it became obvious how bad BYU fans hated it for not being able to get in.
