It won’t create the buzz a Jensen or Bryant hire would’ve created but Utah State has done well under Craig Smith making multiple NCAAs and turning in winning records. Let’s see if Smith can find the same success at a higher level of competition in the PAC-12 coaching and recruiting against the likes of Arizona and Oregon. It won’t be the Mountain West anymore for him.
But Smith at a minimum a decent improvement over the last guy. Coach K was a bad recruiter and the opposite of a players’ coach, and IMO somewhat lazy. At least Utah State doesn’t have an exodus at the end of each season with half the players transferring out. So yes, the bar is a little low right now but this should put the program in a better direction.
He can’t recruit against Arizona Oregon or USC. He doesn’t have the money to compete with those teams. FYI college Bball is still just as dirty as it’s always been. Larry found this out the hard way
Smith needs to find those 3/4 star under the radar types and develop them into 5 star players.
You need to find that balance between players Coach and disciplinarian. Today’s top 100 HS/AAU players are spoiled brats. Coddled and cradled from the moment they show any skill or promise on the court. They are given money clothes cars jewelry pretty much anything. To say they are entitled is an understatement.
Smith needs to avoid that mess all together. Go find the diamonds in the ruff and build winners out of them
Since when did USC become a basketball powerhouse? Trojans had a good season or two. Utah should be able to compete against USC for basketball recruits.
Andy Enfield is as dirty as Sean Miller. He has bought multiple recruits while at SC but just like Miller he’s not a very good Coach so the return on the investment hasn’t always shown up on the court.
^ This. Although. Once he starts winning I think we will start getting more high profile recruits.
