I think this is interesting as the story is written as “who is currently”, and not “who has been historically”.

Based on all that Whitt has done, I absolutely think he belongs on this list from a historical perspective. However, based on who I want coaching my team today, I don’t know that I agree. I’m ready to embrace Scalley and see what he can do. I worry Whitt’s offensive struggles have caught up to him, and will be a continuing struggle for this team until he hangs it up. I would love for this season to prove me wrong, but we will see.

The only reason the offense struggled the last two seasons is because of injuries.

During the two Pac12 championships and Rose Bowls Cam was healthy and the offense was a juggernaut under Ludwig

If Dampier stays healthy with the talent around him especially in the Oline Beck and him will make the O prolific and Whit goes down as one of the greatest CFB Coaches and eventually gets a CFB HOF invite.

While I agree that if Cam had stayed healthy we could have been incredible, the reality is that when Cam got injured, our offense went to crap, and I think Whitt bears a lot of the blame for that. Arguably Brandon Rose and maybe even Luke Bottari should have been ahead of Isaac Wilson on the depth chart, but they weren’t – that’s on Whittingham. Both Cam and Rose played multiple quarters with season ending injuries (in which both cases it was obvious that they were significantly injured and cost us the game) – that’s on Whittingham. And at the end of the season when we needed a new offensive coordinator, we ended up with our 3rd choice (Beck), and from what I hear, that was because of Whittingham too. I heard from an insider that Arbuckle was very interested in coming to be an offensive coordinator for Scalley, but when Whitt announced he was coming back, Arbuckle bounced to Oklahoma, and rightfully so. While that may or may not be true, I do fully believe Whitts presence made it harder (not easier), to find a worthwhile offensive coordinator, and I continue to worry that Whitts style of coaching will continue to hurt us on offense.

            Rangum,
I can tell you with certainty that what you’ve heard about Scalley wanting Arbuckle as number one choice is false. He liked Arbuckle and would have supported the hire but he wanted Whittingham to interview Beck from the start and when Arbuckle “used” the Utah position to get Oklahoma Whittingham agreed to bring in Beck.

The second guy interviewed, I forget his name, would not have been offered the position. Neither Whittingham nor Scalley felt like he was the right fit. Not a negative, just not the right fit. The media and fans assumed that the second guy interviewed was the second choice. It was not the case.

Beck was then interviewed separately by Whitt and then Scalley. They both agreed quickly that he was the guy.

Technically, you could say Arbuckle was the first choice; but if you got Scalley to speak candidly, he’d tell you that Beck was his first choice. That matters a ton given the inevitability of Scalley.

Nobody wants to hear their narrative is tired and old. Fans who don’t know anything about the program will continue to blame Whit for a problem he fixed years ago.
