So long to a $40 million plus influx of cash into the local economy. Apparently Herbert doesn’t even understand cold hard cash (unless it’s flowing directly to him from energy companies). What a joke and embarrassment of a governor.

The problem is that the 40 million is going to the taxpayers and not into Herbert’s wallet. If his donors or he was getting the money, they’d care. Now they can drill baby drill and further line their pockets.

Meh. Utah is #3 ranked in federally owned land % by state. Utah has carried its load of preserving lands better than all states except 2. I think there can be some better balance with the bear ears footprint. I’m for preserving lands for the public, I get turned off by distant beaurocrats celebrating their executive order of Bears Ears by tweeting a picture of Arches. Have they even been to either?

I don’t feel that it should be about “carrying the load” — we are fortunate enough in this state to be in close proximity to some of the most beautiful areas in the country and have the chance to recreate in them. Having those lands be protected is a good thing.

I feel like people think that federally owned land is a bad thing, just because they don’t like the idea of federal government. Public lands are accessbale by us. Much more so than they would be in the hands of private companies that just seek to exploit them for their own gain.

Public lands are something that this country got right. But we seem to be in a day and age where we are willing to give them up to individual states to sell off to the highest bidder – no matter what their intentions are.

My problem is that the feds don’t do as promised in regards to these public lands, like fund PILT. That hurts Utah schools and puts us at a steep disadvantage to other states. Fund PILT and make it roughly equivalent to what the states and counties would get if the lands were private and this battle would die.

@Hammer If I had any trust in Herbie, Bishop, Chaffetz et al then I might be inclined to agree w/ you.  But we all know this is not about “better management of State lands” it’s about placating the people that have lined their political pockets

Agreed. And I pay my taxes, so I’m part of that “general public” that’s paying for the use of those lands. It’s not like I’m expecting others to pay and not pay myself.

I don’t know the details on this, but isn’t it a case of a group of people who are here for 2 weeks a year trying to force Utah to cave to their political views because they spend money here?

This brings up another good point. Why should we allow companies do try and bully states into compliance with their political views? Isn’t that anathema to democracy?

I can understand that viewpoint. I work in the outdoor industry here in Salt Lake, so this issue hits close to home for me, and there’s definitely the possibility that I’m viewing this from inside my own bubble.

I think the OR show leaving is just emblematic of my greater frustration with the threat to public lands in this state, as someone who makes frequent use of them and loves them. It’s a huge part of why I choose to live here over somewhere else.

Black Diamond is a Utah founded and based company, I believe Petzl is, GoalZero, CampChef and I believe several more that are locally owned and operated.
They are trying to protect a vital component of their industry, places for people to use the products they make. Can you blame them for that? We all know what will happen IF Utah were to succeed in it’s quest to steal the land from the American People. Read paragraph two of the Enabling Act. Utah has given up all rights and claims to the federal lands within the states borders. One need not be an attorney to comprehend the enabling act.

The question is what was an unappropriated land at the time of the Enabling Act and what that means according to the Constitution. I read some interesting legal theories years ago that seems to cut against the cut and dry reading you suggest.

I don’t know what people are upset about. Rumor is the governor is in secret negotiations to bring the annual Strip mining, Fracking, and Drilling Exposition to Utah…it’s gonna be great!
