8 — Through six games, ASU has allowed eight passing plays of 40-plus yards. Only four teams (Middle Tennessee, Rice, UTEP and SMU) have allowed more.
From what it sounds like, ASU is fairly good at stopping the run (I don’t think Booker gets 200 yards against ASU as he did against CAL), but their secondary is often left out to dry because they blitz so much. The key, in my mind, to beating ASU is taking advantage & being able to connect on big passing plays. This is not something we’re adept at.
The second key to the game will be TO margin. In both of ASU’s losses (TAMU, USC) they lost the turnover battle. This, at least, is something Utah has excelled at to this point in the season.
I believe Utah’s defense will be able to limit ASU’s rushing attack & put pressure on ASU’s QB & get some TO’s.
In the end it may come down to Travis & his ability to put points on the board especially if our defense gives him a short field to work with. 6 TO’s & only 17 points off of TO is not acceptable.
Would love to see us get Fulks out there to burn some DB’s in 1v1. Will be a big game for Butler Byrd on that side of the ball too. We need playmakers at WR to win this one
Travis Wilson needs to be closer to his “Oregon” performance than his “Cal” performance.
If that happens and the defense plays similar to how they have so far in big games, then we should take this game.
GO UTES!!!
Another key is not being outcoached. I swear for some reason ASU has simply had us confused, especially defensively.
ASU will stack the box. They’ve done it every single time we’ve played them. We need Travis to be hitting on passes and take off some of the pressure up front.
Score one more point than they do.
well, I personally think DJ Foster with Jalen Strong was the best 1-2 punch i’ve seen in a long time. DJ is now at running back and they don’t have that much depth at the WR position.
but i do think booker needs 150 + yards for us to win. i lack confidence in our pass game and don’t expect much.
Foster has been used mostly out of the slot (he’s listed as a WR). I think he’s only had one or two carries the last couple of games. He hasn’t been nearly the factor this season that they anticipated. Hopefully that trend continues on Saturday.
Using Booker in the passing game will be the best option I believe. Screen passes in the flats wouldn’t hurt either. Additionally Booker will still need to get his touches around 35 but I just think more in the passing game would be beneficial. I also want to see more twin back sets.
Travis nearly hit Booker on a wheel route against Cal. Just barely over threw him & went off Bookers finger tips.
With Bookers speed & catch ability I’d like to see Utah run that again.
It could be a home run ball that Wilson doesn’t need to throw 30+ yards
Yeah that was on Wilson I think he rushed the pass.
On the Defensive side, Utah needs to do what ATM did to ASU: 9 sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Creating TOs will help. Utah is more than capable of producing these results.
On offense, we desperately need TW to defeat the blitz with effective passing over the middle. If he gets happy feet, drops his head and runs for it, we’re in for a long and ugly night. Booker will get his yards. How much can TW open the field for Booker is the question.
I’m thinking pressure on Bercovici and resultant TOs will be the prevailing theme. We’ll come away with a close win and another frustrating performance out of TW.
there are many ways to combat the constant blitz. i just hope it’s not 37 wide receiver screens. or, if we do it, we should learn how to do it like CAL. i re-watched that game and CAL constantly had a pick going before the ball was in the air. i think it got called once.
wouldn’t mind seeing 2 TE’s early on
don’t be surprised if graham has some defensive tricks up his sleeve. he knows we’ve practiced hard to contain the blitzing scheme. i’ll bet he mixes it up more than we anticipate.
We should absolutely run the pick play when they man up on our WRs. PAC refs won’t call it unless it is blatantly obvious.
