Charlie replied to the topic Governor Newsom pushing back on the UCLA move in the forum Football 3 years ago
I agree, there likely will not be a change because UCLA is forced. If UCLA was to change from the direction that benefits them it would be because they don’t want to upset the BOR that they may depend on for other unrelated support. All that is unlikely because I’m not sure that if it is a BOR decision they would not also proceed letting UCLA…[Read more]

I am not sure you have looked at this from the Cal perspective. Realignment is very likely to hurt Cal and could be seen as unnecessary in the big picture. At work most decisions I was free to make but inside the limits of those I could were things I would be able to recognize were best done by providing a ‘heads=up’. In this case, the only…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Utah's 2022 defense in the forum Football 3 years ago
I think best players, down and distance, and offense all figure in. I have seen a Utah trend of more sets in addition to the base defense. More depth and different skill sets play into that. I am fine using that depth to do different sets on 3rd and short vs 3rd and long. Was it Oregon State when after Lloyd went out late in the game we were…[Read more]

A division with 2 conferences and 40 teams seems odd. That would be divisions of 10 that would require 9 division games. Not much crossover but could be done. 4 conferences with 8 playoff spots allows for 4 at large playoff teams which provides the BIG and SEC a way to still dominate playoffs. The ACC is set for media contracts and can’t be…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Big 12 vs Pac 10 – do we have preferences? in the forum Football 3 years ago
I think this is likely, however, it probably will not be 20 teams. I think the top 14 teams can get pretty much the same money as 20. Those driving this conference will want to have as much money as possible trying to match the ACC. Hopefully, it is attractive to Washington and Oregon. Oregon State, Washington State, Kansas, Kansas State and…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Are the Pac 12 teams a fit for the Big 12 in the forum Football 3 years ago
I pretty much agree. I learned long ago to analyze with math not emotion to get at solutions. The critical math will be regional TVs followed by interest level in a particular school as a modifier. It must be an interesting balance between the older generation that remembers the previous century of football vs folks 30s and under that only…[Read more]

Likely a long shot but possible if someone above both schools in the Cal system makes a decision best for Cali schools in general.

I was surprised that UCLA could go somewhere without Cal since they are managed together. Next, however Washington State and Oregon State likely fall very far if Washington and Oregon move on. At the end of the day, it seems hard to believe that the people at the top will allow one of their teams to advance at the expense of one of their other…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Utah Must Explore All Options Now in the forum Football 3 years ago
It does not make sense for UCLA and USC to travel so far for Big 10 conference sports. It makes more sense, given that the two are leaving, that there is a likely Big 10 west division of some sorts. That would suggest that the Pac 12 and maybe the Big 12 will have schools fill in this division, with mostly Pac schools. You might expect the best…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic RIP PAC 12, JON WILNER in the forum Pac-12 3 years ago
Possibly, the Cali schools are trying to get special benefits from the Pac. I am surprised that UCLA would separate from Stanford and Cal. If this was to happen, I expect the 6 best schools in the Big 12 would have the option to join the Pac which would be a better option then the planned Big 12 today. Nebraska has not met their Big 10 dreams…[Read more]

Grand Old Opry even if Country music is not your thing. Broadway for bars and music but get ready for crowds.

Drive to Fort Worth and go to the Stockyards. Restaurants and bars.

I expect to see Kuithe line up on the outside as well. He is a very good blocking TE so when he is outside the downfield blocking will be noted.

Charlie started the topic Pac CCG change in the forum Football 3 years, 1 month ago
Jon Wilner summed up the need for change this way:
Over the course of 11 years, the Pac-12 championship game has paired top-10 teams only three times and included an unranked team twice.
Had the new model been in place, top-10 teams would have squared off five times; no unranked team would have ever set foot on the field.
It would seem the…[Read more] -
Charlie replied to the topic Jordan Addison transfers to USC. in the forum Pac-12 3 years, 1 month ago
Last year USC had a couple of very good QBs, several very good WRs, and a WR that was as good as any in the country in London. But football is complex and Utah found a way to beat USC even with those advantages. I like our balance of good offense and good defense and great culture.

Charlie replied to the topic Personally I love all the USC hype in the forum Football 3 years, 1 month ago
The hype is fine. The conference needs a successful old blue blood school. If we did not want to play up hill against conference teams we could have stayed in the MWC. I would rather play against some of the best ranked teams, the more the better. I feel like our current relationship with the USC fanbase is as good as you could expect from any…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Conference Expansion in the forum Football 3 years, 1 month ago
USC already has a path to more money, win the conference championship and go to the playoffs. A new conference will not help them win games, it may make it harder. What USC needs and the fans want is to win the conference much more often. IF they did that they would see the playoffs more often than other Pac champs and all the problems are…[Read more]

The Pac will not get to the playoffs unless the highest ranked team wins the chanpionship with the best possible wins. That team needs to meet the best possible team in the CCG. I think the SEC can get away with a wins over 4 poor opponents, I just don’t think the Pac can. But I am also bias, I don’t like low quality opponents. I wish wins…[Read more]

I do like the divisions however, the first two years the highest ranked team did not go to the CCG which seems strange. This will improve the rank of the champion particuarly when there is an upset in the CCG. As it is two teams in the same division can have very different schedules. Divisions would be awesome if everyone played everyone. This…[Read more]
