How does everyone feel about Huntley pulling away from Cox as #2?

Talk up on the hill right now, is that Huntley is playing with two’s. Is this good or bad?

I think its good in that Huntley will likely see some live game action this fall, which should help him mature as a player, and bad, in that he won’t get a redshirt year to learn and grow before being thrown into the thick of things.

What say you?

  • Utah

I think it is a good thing, but hopefully an irrelevant thing. Ideally, you’d redshirt Huntley. Then, he can step in as a RS sophomore and take the team to victory.

Naming him as the second string, hopefully is in title only. That way, if Williams doesn’t get hurt, Huntley never plays and he redshirts even though he was the #2.

It wouldn’t shock me if Williams goes down for a play or a quarter or half if Cox comes in and plays. But if Williams were to miss games, you’d see the Huntley era begin.

One thing to not forget is that this is Williams’ last chance. He had one shot at Washington and didn’t succeed. If he loses his spot to Huntley or Cox, his career is over.

I don’t think you will see Williams willingly leave the game this year. He has too much at stake.

  • KiYi-Ute

I think Cox is a great backup option. He has years in the system and knows it better than both Williams and Huntley. The coaches also know him better, they know what they can and cannot do with him if he does need to play and can draw up a game plan that suites his skill-set and ability. I’ll admit, it is worrisome that he never beat out Travis for the starter job. But I think you keep him as a #2.

Huntley, in my opinion, is too valuable to this team to waste by putting him in as a true freshman. Mostly, he needs the time to bulk up in the weight room. I worry that we put him in there, he’s not ready for the speed of the game, and he gets drilled and hurt. Huntley is the future of Utah football at this point, I don’t think it’s wise to risk throwing him to the wolves. Getting a few reps with the #2s in practice is fine; but I hope we keep Cox at #2 for the season.

Edit: Also, you don’t want to risk the chance that Cox transfers if you put Huntley at #2 on the depth chart. I know he’s said that he won’t ever transfer, but things change.

  • Utah

Also, isn’t talking about redshirts now kind of…I don’t know…unimportant? Redshirts aren’t official until the season ends, correct? So, who cares if you get redshirted now, you can play at any time and if you do play you can redshirt another year and if you don’t play, you just redshirt at the end of the season.

The coaches should be mindful of it so they don’t waste a kid’s year of eligibility, but we as fans…is it important right now.

  • CincyUte

The issue is whether we should postpone Huntley’s career so he’s still eligible to play in 2020–

I think we have to expect that, between now and 2020, we’ll land some other capable QB recruits that we can groom and prepare to take the reigns at that time. I say don’t hesitate to play Huntley now if the need arises. We can worry about 2020 later.

    • KiYi-Ute

While I did say that Huntley is the future of Utah football (at least for the foreseeable future), and as awesome as it would be to have him be crushing it in 2020; I think you need to look at the well-being of the kid in addition to the program itself.

He graduated high school early, and right now he’s listed at 6’1” 178 pounds. Josh Rosen, by comparison is listed at 210 pounds. Playing him in practice and controlled scrimmages is one thing, but putting him out against P5 defenses? I think there is a serious risk for injury. Granted, football is a physical game and injuries are normal, but I think there’s a certain point where you say that the risk outweighs the reward.

I’m no coach. I haven’t even seen him play except for the scrimmage highlights. But I think you let him bulk up, let him develop, and put faith in Cox for a year in the event that Williams goes down with a serious injury.

  • iamthepreacher

I’m a little concerned with putting Cox in the game knowing that two guys who are brand new to the program (including a true freshman) came in and beat him out. Plus, last year he was not able to beat out Travis or Kendall Thompson. I’ve heard reports out of camp that he has a bad habit of floating way too many passes that will get picked off against good or even decent defenses, something he hasn’t been able to correct in his time at the U.

If we have to try to win a game with a backup, Huntley might be our best shot.

We’ve got good unproven talent at QB this year, but I’d say our QB depth overall is not yet where it needs to be.

    • noneyadb

“All in or in the way” correct?

Wouldn’t Whit be “in the way” if he isn’t giving his team the best chance to win?

    • I don’t care to look but I am fairly certain Cox wasn’t healthy to beat out Thompson or Wilson last season.  Hansen was in the mix heading into fall camp  as the three.

  • noneyadb

    DeAndre Mcneal 4 star recruit

  • Puget Ute

What is the likelihood he could transfer to Utah? We could use an additional powerful receiver.

    • noneyadb

Utah should be his obvious choice. Utes have a big need at WR.

      6’2″ 228 lb’s from the Dallas area..

Jason Shelley new QB commit is also from the Dallas area..

      • 3

A need at WR?  So what you are saying is he will make a great corner?

        • Tony

        • KiYi-Ute

          Nailed it.

  • GoUtes

I would love for the Utes to pick up a talented WR; however, I feel like transfers from big-name programs are hit or miss (e.g. Gionni Paul vs. Daryl Poston). Always great to add more talented players though. Would be sweet!

  • Wilson's Mustache

Reports are that DeAndre McNeal will be enrolling at Tyler Junior College, signed LOI. Utah reportedly wasn’t interested.

    Barkley’s comments on team USA

I love Barkley. He nailed the issue with USA basketball:

“When they put that team together in the future, they have to realize we can’t have just really, really great offensive players. They gotta have players that if they don’t get a shot, they’re not just gonna stand around and mope.”

  • Milton Vanderslice

I would love to see this go back to the college players or at least U25

  • You add Lebron that team would win by 20 every game. You add Curry and it would be even wider margin.

    • Wilson's Mustache

I don’t think its a matter of talent.

      • Lebron gives you a leader and defense.  Who is the leader on that team? Melo? Please.  NBA stars only listen to who is the best.  Lebron and Curry are the best in the NBA by a wide margin.

        • Wilson's Mustache

Kevin Durant, Paul George, Kyrie Irving….

If you think Lebron and Curry are better than Durant by a large margin you don’t know basketball. Kevin Durant might be the best pure scorer in the league & at 6’11 he’s no slouch on defense either.

As for defense Draymond Green, DeAndre Jordan, Paul George, and Jimmy Butler were all defensive first team players this year.

          This isn’t a talent problem.

          • Lebron is so much more physically gifted than those guys it isn’t even close.  He just recently beat probably the best Regular season team in NBA history.  Team USA without some of the best in the game is a big deal.

I include Curry because he seemingly has no range.

            • Wilson's Mustache

Lebron is a freak athlete but so is Kevin Durant. The guy is 6’11 & has handles like a pg. Kevin Durant is a better overall scorer than Lebron ever has or will be. Lebron is a better defender & overall player however.

              • Lebron has several championships and Durant doesn’t. It just isn’t very close. Jordan is the GOAT and Lebron is in that same discussion. I would probably take several historical players over Durant at this point.

                • Wilson's Mustache

I understand that the point of the game is to win Championships, but you couldn’t pick a worse way to judge players. There are plenty of great players that haven’t won any & there are plenty of meh players that have many.

By your standards Robert Horry is better than Lebron. Does that make Karl Malone & John Stockton any less impressive?

Besides, Durant is most likely going to win several now anyways.

                • Winning championships bolsters the argument though. Duncan and Malone are very different players and have very different accomplishments. A lot of people consider Duncan a center even. I think Duncan is the best PF to ever play the game and winning championships ends the argument. Winning in general makes it easier to say Duncan is one of the best of all time. Malone is very good as well but he also blew it when it mattered. Durant has shown that same ability and looks to win several with the Splash brothers.

I also know winning isn’t the only stat that matters but Lebron elevates his entire team. I don’t see that same ability in Durant or any of the current Team USA roster. Curry makes that Warriors team so much better than it already is.

                • You are an NBA GM who could sign Durant or Lebron but not both. You are saying you would take Durant?

                • Wilson's Mustache

I’d take Lebon > Durant > Steph Curry

PAC-12 week by week predictions: Week 8.

I started this on UF.N and wanted to keep going. I don’t want to stand by my original predictions because I didn’t have a lot of information pre-fall camp, but what the hell. I’m too lazy to do them over again. So, I’ll continue what I started:

Coming into this week, here is where I have the standings:

    #08 Stanford 5-1 (4-0) [8,6,6,4,4,4,4]
    #23 Oregon 4-2 (2-1) [20,18,NR,NR,NR,NR,25,25]
    #24 WSU 4-2 (1-2) [NR,NR,25,23,23,13,18]
    Cal 3-2 (1-2) [NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    OSU 1-5 (0-3) [NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    Washington 3-3 (0-3) [17,17,16,16,NR,NR]

    #7 Utah 7-0 (4-0) [NR,NR,NR,24,15,15,13]
    #19 UCLA 5-2 (3-1) [22,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    USC 4-3 (3-2) [12,15,13,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    ASU 5-2 (2-2) [NR,NR,NR,NR,25,NR,NR]
    Arizona 4-3 (1-3) [NR,NR,NR,NR,18,NR,NR]
    Colorado 3-4 (1-3) [NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]

    The schedule:

Oregon at Cal: Easy. Oregon is rolling by now, Cal has realized why Webb left his previous school. Oregon rolls, 45-28.

WSU @ ASU: See above. The wheels are falling off the ASU bus and Falk is killing it at WSU. Heisman talk and all. WSU wins, 41-17.

Utah @ UCLA: Ok, so I have Utah as 7-0 right now. The problem is, no one goes undefeated in the PAC-12. It just doesn’t happen. BUT, going forward, where do I have Utah lose? They probably split the UCLA/Washington series. That leaves the other losses as Oregon and possibly Arizona, cause Arizona reasons.

Here is where I think Utah can lose games: USC, UCLA, Washington, Arizona, Oregon. That’s five potential losses. If they can go 3-2, they win the south. If they can go 4-1, they make the playoffs (if they beat Stanford and if they go 4-1, they can beat Stanford).

USC is a scheduled win for Utah. If Utah is ever going to be USC, this year is the year.

The UCLA game is a tough one. Utah does have OSU the week before. UCLA does have WSU the week before. Advantage Utah. UCLA has Rosen. Advantage UCLA. BUT, UCLA’s WR’s are unproven and Utah’s DB’s are elite. Advantage Utah. But, it is on the road. Advantage UCLA. BUT, UCLA is coming off a brutal run in their schedule. 7 out of their 8 weeks are against P5-level teams with no bye week. They have a bye after the Utah game. They will be worn down. Advantage Utah. See the conundrum? This is the definition of a 50/50 game.

So, what happens? I have to have Utah lose to either UCLA or Washington. If they win both, then that means their only potential loss moving forward is ASU or Oregon.

This game is a dogfight. Defense rules the day. Both teams struggle to move the ball. But, the difference is that instead of us turning the ball over in the redzone, UCLA does. Utah wins 21-20.

Colorado @ Stanford: Colorado starts to come into their own. They have always played the PAC-12 teams tough, but they always lose by less than a score. Stanford’s inexperience at QB come back to bite them in this game and it stays much closer than it should be, but McCaffery gets a late punt returned for a TD to win it, 35-38.

OSU @ Washington: Washington rolls. Too much defense. 34-17.

So, after 8 weeks, the standings:

    #07 Stanford 5-1 (5-0) [8,6,6,4,4,4,4,8]
    #20 Oregon 5-2 (3-1) [20,18,NR,NR,NR,NR,25,25,23]
    #21 WSU 5-2 (2-2) [NR,NR,25,23,23,13,18,24]
    Cal 3-3 (1-3) [NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    OSU 1-6 (0-4) [NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    Washington 4-3 (1-3) [17,17,16,16,NR,NR,NR]

    #6 Utah 8-0 (5-0) [NR,NR,NR,24,15,15,13,7]
    #25 UCLA 5-3 (3-2) [22,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,19]
    USC 4-3 (3-2) [12,15,13,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]
    ASU 5-3 (2-3) [NR,NR,NR,NR,25,NR,NR,NR]
    Arizona 4-3 (1-3) [NR,NR,NR,NR,18,NR,NR,NR]
    Colorado 3-5 (1-4) [NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR,NR]

Dude. You have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on your hands.

Yeah. P**ses me off. I want to work. But alas, this is my reality. I want to work…without working too hard…and I’m surrounded by morons, so that means I have too many days where I sit around and do nothing…

      First world problems, right?

I am thinking about going to the UCLA game this year. Since you pick it as a win, I am booking my tickets now. I assume if the Utes lose you will pay for me trip?

Keep these going. I enjoy them.

  • Milton Vanderslice

I think you can call that the “Utah lock”. So book your tickets now. Utah will offer a refund should we lose. 🙂

  • 3

Utah beats Stanford it is just a thing they do now. 💪😜

Hooray for double-OT road games that we DO actually win.
