How many times in the last decade have we beat the TrDS with a backup QB? I can think of Hays and Shelly. Those backup QB wins are my favorite. Especially with a backup so poorly rated and recruited as Jon Hays. I love that guy.

Yeah Ratliff hadn’t ever started a game and went down to zoobie land and beat ’em.

If I’m not mistaken, Ratliff is one of only 3 former Ute QBs to have taken a snap in an NFL game this century.

The other two of course were Smith and Huntley.

I was in the South Endzone for that game. Bitter cold. Right next to BYU fans. But I remember watching it at halftime and thinking, we are still gonna win this if we don’t let them get up by another score. We didn’t (though they did score it was a net neutral because of the Blackmon INT). Good game.

That was a tough game to watch for sure. Super cold. I was sitting with a bunch of strangers since all my family bailed. I thought I was the dumb one that went to the game, but by the end I was so glad I went….. and stayed.

Alex Smith was the backup to Brett Elliot back in 2003.  Utah wound up breaking the tdS record of games played without a shutout (362 games, from 9/25/75 to 11/22/03) that year, and then went on to shutout Southern Miss in the Liberty Bowl.
