BYU is projected to take the field in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
And remember, the Vegas Bowl is now the #3 bowl in the PAC-12 lineup. This is saying Utah will be the #3 P12 team and will get a Big 10 or SEC team NOT the MWC crap it used to be.
The #1 P12 team this year gets the Fiesta Bowl (because the Rose Bowl is a playoff bowl).
The #2 gets the Alamo Bowl vs Big 10 team
The #3 gets the Vegas Bowl vs Big 10 or SEC
It’s the #3 bowl but apparently it’s not a given it will even be played. I guess the PAC 12 has already lost the redbox, LA and Holiday bowls due to the pandemic as well.
True, but it seems like a lot of Utah fans are disappointed with the Vegas Bowl because it was usually a bad bowl. It’s not anymore. It’s an upper tier college football bowl and honestly, will probably have better “name” teams year in, year out than the Alamo Bowl due to the Big 10/SEC alliance vs the Alamo Bowl’s Big 12 matchup.
That’s all I was saying.
Absolutely. It does seem like Ute fans don’t like the idea of a Vegas bowl. This year it would be against an SEC team and it’s not far from Salt Lake so Ute fans should be happy with it. Especially this year with such a young defense.
Totally agree. SEC in Vegas is a dream for Utah. We should pack the house. I think it will take a year or two for fans to realize that this isn’t last year’s Vegas Bowl. This is now a destination bowl vs a destination team.
Allegiant Stadium can hold 65,000 fans. This game will be packed (post COVID) and if Utah fans aren’t careful, it will have 40,000 Big 10 or SEC fans there. It will be a game where the #3 team in the SEC will try to get.
Last year it would have been USC/Utah vs Alabama/Auburn/Florida.
It would have been amazing.
I don’t have a problem with the Las Vegas Bowl. I just had a problem with being relegated there to play an unranked midmajor, when we were a ranked co-Division champion. Obviously, that won’t be the case anymore, in the path forward.
And for what it’s worth, it’s probably in the best “venue” amid all the Pac-12 tie-in bowls.
BYU in the Fiesta Bowl? So 2020…
It really comes down to this week for them. If they beat Boise then they will likely be undefeated and left out of the playoff. If they lose to Boise… well without a bowl tie-in, they may be left out in the cold if these lower bowls keep dropping out.
Amen. If BYU loses to Boise St, they go away. They become completely irrelevent.
I approve this message.
The only reason they’re listed as going to that game is because they currently are the 2nd highest ranked G5 team (behind Cincinnati). The Big 12 has already basically played themselves out of the CFP, as every team but one in that league currently has at least two losses, sans Oklahoma State. If the Cowboys lose another game, the entire Big 12 is basically out of CFP consideration, which means their champion is going to go the Cotton Bowl. The Rose and Sugar Bowls are the sites of the CFP semifinals this season, and it’s extremely unlikely that a G5 team is going to make the CFP unless only 3 or fewer P5 teams have 1 or zero losses. Cincinnati is currently ranked like #6 in the country though, so, things could change this year.
