Nevada vs. Tulane

Anyone else watching this game, explain this to me.

Nevada got a first down at the 2 yard line, making it 1st and goal. After the play, they got called for an unsportsmanlike penalty. The ball was brought back to the 17 where it was then 1st and 10.

If the penalty was after the play, why wouldn’t it have been 1st and goal from the 17?

What they di was correct.  Several years ago the NCAA changed the rule so that a personal foul after a 1st down or change of possession did not make it 1st and 25.  Different story if it was on 2nd or third down.
