How much does coaching have to do with punting?

I don’t really know, but I’m guessing not much.

Mechanics and technique: not a whole lot at this level.  Strategy, placement, recognizing what the defense is coming with, etc.: quite a bit.

Both Hackett and Wishnowsky are a product of that football kicking academy in Australia, so I’ll say coaching played a major role (albeit from somewhere other than Utah).

I agree with EUte, as far as the actual punt, not much, but dedication to the special teams, HUGE. A good punter comes to Utah, the entire punt team is built around that punter. World class long snapper, blocking and gunners who get their asses down there to down the ball. I have no inside knowledge but I’m willing to bet our program spends a hell of a lot of time, effort and reps on special teams compared to most teams in the country.

If you’re a good punter, you want to come to Utah. If you’re a good D-lineman or DB same thing.

      Now, if you’re a QB?????????

One position at a time I guess.
