A @BlindSideFB analyst has an inside source stating that Charlie Brewer’s desired destination is to the University of Utah. Brewer entered the transfer portal yesterday with one season of eligibility remaining. Utah QB Jake Bentley graduates after this season.

In past 12 days, 190 players have now entered NCAA Transfer Portal. W/all players not losing year of eligibility, there could be massive roster issues nationally and/or a ton of players w/no where to transfer

Yeah that has been my question since they announced this year doesn’t count. Felt like a giant oversight to not simultaneously say roster restrictions won’t matter in 2021. Maybe with the transfer rules they figured who cares?

Exactly. Which why I’m surprised to see so many hit the portal. Whoever is whispering in these kids ears, better have a spot lined up for them on another team before they hit the portal, otherwise it’s not worth it this year.

Why are you surprised? I figure this is the fallout. Teams need to trim the fat so to speak. We want to throw Wilmore and Brumfield decisions at their feet. Who is to say Utah didn’t say bye first?

Gonna be crazy weekend as this is one giant free agency year so to speak.

Agreed. Every situation is different, but schools are going to need to open up space for the new recruits. Some players may leave on their own, but others may be gently told there is no longer room for them on the roster. It is going to be like working at a company where you know layoffs are coming.

The transfer portal is going to be nuts.

There’s no chance we’d said that to Wilmore.

Because they may have nowhere else to go. Wilmore will probably be fine. Brumfield might not find a landing spot. I guess he could just retire from football but still keep his scholarship to the U if wanted.

With all of these kids in the portal, there is no way all of them will find a place to play.

I’m not surprised Brumfield hit the portal, but is it really better for him to do so?

Brumfield has 2 years of eligibilty left.  He was a solid but not spectacular player while at Utah and by all accounts a great teammate and dedicated worker.  I am sure there are a number of G5 teams closer to his home in Louisiana where he would be a solid starting tailback for his last two years of eligibility.

Maybe. But the portal being so full, maybe not. Unless he’s already been speaking to other teams and has one lined up

Ok I guess I am misunderstanding your surprise.  Frankly I am surprised this hasn’t been going on earlier. Utah and other schools will have to say goodbye to kids. As Whitt has said lifeblood of your program is recruiting it is the most important thing you can do.

Expanding on that to an even broader problem society in general is going to feel the impacts of this for decades. Universities are basically charging full price to these kids for an inferior product. All of education is one big joke right now in America and it amplified the already existing problems. Saying it was unessential is shocking. Rabbit hole of conspiracy theories from there.

Is it official that Bentley won’t be returning next year?  Note:

      1.  This year didn’t count, so he’s still eligible for one more season.

      2.  He’d only started 3-games thus far, and only came close to impressing anyone just last weekend.  If he crushes it vs. Wazzu, and then again in the postseason (assuming we get a bowl), I still don’t see his sample size large enough to elicit a combine invite.  If he has pro intentions, he’ll need to either come back next year, or transfer to another school where he’ll have a better chance at starting than he will in SLC behind Rising.

      3.  If he decides to transfer for one more Senior year, who will look at his time in SLC and say, “Yep.  THAT’s the guy we want.”  Well, except for maybe ybU.  They’ll take anything we cast off.  And he’s likely better than anyone they have now.

Never seen Charlie Brewer throw a pass, but based on our QB situation, really hoping this is true!!!

Bentley has another year of eligibility. If Rising can’t go, he may stick around, hoping to play himself into the league. If he can, great. I’m not writing him off yet. Ludwig is better than Muschamp at getting more from his QBs.

The little bit of tape I could find on Brewer, he doesn’t look like a great pick up to me. Maybe a solid QB3 type of guy, but I’m not seeing a dude that could step in for a Rising or Costelli if they went down. What am I missing?

Could just be brought in for depth. Chances are if he isnt making it at Baylor, he won’t make it here. It sounds like Lisk is gone and whether or not Bentley comes back is unknown. With Rising and Costelli, you still need one more guy. I’m not sure they want to make Costelli QB 2 yet, but who knows. Always good to have a back up plan I guess.

There was a moment in the Colorado game where Bentley was slow getting up, and I thought for sure Lisk would see the field. If Lisk does not return (which I would understand, but would also be sad to see), I really hope we blow out WSU so that he can get some playing time.

To me it seems that we would be better off limiting our QB recruiting and transfer portal searching to only going after dual threat QBs. I know everyone on here wishes we brought in Dart to go along with Costelli but I don’t think Dart fits our identity. No question he’s a highly talented 4* QB. But let’s face it, we are never going to be a team that slings it all over the place. Our MO with Whit at the helm is always going to be to pound the rock while keeping teams honest with a conservative passing game that provides a level of balance to our offense. As part of our offensive identity, Whit prefers a QB who can make plays with his legs when things break down and add to our ground game. Dart would be much better off going to USC or some air raid type of offense. We were told before the season that this might be the first time where our offense has to carry our defense and maybe look to throw the ball 55-60% of the time vs run it to keep us in games. But that’s not who we are and that’s one of the things I’ve taken away from this shortened season.

I watched a few Baylor games last year. Brewer may not have eye-popping measurables but he put the team on his back multiple times to win games late or in OT.

We still don’t know what we have in Rising, Costelli may go 20 months without any competitive snaps, and Bentley hasn’t convinced anyone that he can make plays on a consistent basis.

I don’t want to keep tying the future at QB to transfers, but if we assume Bentley moves on, Brewer would be a good one and done. 2021 has 10 win potential. As long as bringing in Brewer doesn’t cost more than Bentley, making sure that Utah is solid at QB for next season seems like a decent plan.
