i think the college all-star games ended once they beat the defending champion. not a lot of appetite from the pro’s after that point, especially since it wasn’t a money maker for them. remember that until television money changed the dynamics, most pro’s had to have off-season jobs.
not sure which year’s would have been affected but all the…[Read more]

practices were always split so that a couple days a week we were down at the stadium, otherwise it was on the field to the east (?) of the sports building / locker rooms. there wasn’t any fencing then and so there were always at least 50 people in lawn chairs with coolers watching with the exception of the inevitable snow practice that you got…[Read more]

88/89 under Fassel it was still at Rice and we did the steak/hot dog dinner. Could the practice field spring game(s) have coincided with stadium construction?
2008 National Champ replied to the topic Reading way too much? in the forum Football 5 days, 13 hours ago
agree. the spring game isn’t about getting starters reps. it’s a chance to see the rest of the roster in game-like conditions to see who steps up.
There’s a reason you hear a lot of different names in Spring and early Fall camp and then they disappear. Whit won’t learn anything from another scrimmage with Brewer getting the majority of reps.…[Read more]

because you are limiting the population of people who have to follow your rule to only football and men’s basketball. Why should a coach be allowed to break his contract with a school but a student-athlete can’t? Why is a student-athlete in any other sport allowed to give up their scholarship and change schools without penalty but football and…[Read more]

it puts football and men’s basketball in line with all other college sports where players are allowed to transfer without penalty.
i don’t think there should ever be a rule that states a player is only allowed out of their scholarship because a coach leaves. unfortunately, the fine print on a Letter of Intent creates that very situation. i…[Read more]

NCAA approves 1 time transfer rule
This is huge. The chaos of the transfer portal is here to stay.
I’m of two minds on this one:
1) I like that kids have the opportunity to re-evaluate the decisions they made on which school to attend after they’ve been able to spend time there, just like every other student can. It gives them the same…[Read more]

no, the player’s ability as shown on tape and based on coach’s research into said player is what leads to an offer. if a recruiting ranking happens to agree with the coach’s assessment, great.
take a look at the offers Utah has made for this years class. There are 2 RB’s and 2 WR’s who do not have a ranking on 247 that have received offers (i…[Read more]

recruiting rankings shouldn’t have anything to do with his being a walk-on. Whitt doesn’t need to consult 247 or Rivals before offering a kid a scholarship.
2008 National Champ replied to the topic ESPN releases CFB power ranking index. Where are the Utes? in the forum Football 1 week, 1 day ago
All of these indexes are based on returning production. Not sure how (if) they pro-rated for the uneven schedules of 2020 but it’s pretty easy to see how Utah would receive a lower score than you might believe they should have.
Bear in mind that Utah essentially gets a zero at RB and QB. There is a lot of promise at those positions but Brewer…[Read more]

I respectfully disagree. I was at the 2017 game which came down to a missed two-point conversion where in real time, I thought Williams had a receiver open but decided to run. I believe that there was also a game in LA where Utah lost on a late blocked field goal which could have been the game winner.
Notwithstanding games where Travis Wilson…[Read more]

Helton has a 4-2 record against Utah including 3 of the last 4. Not sure SC needs a new coach to make life difficult for Utah.
2008 National Champ replied to the topic Charlie Brewer in the forum Football 1 week, 6 days ago
Tate Martell, Ricky Towns. Two guys that kept transferring until they ran out of places.
If Jackson doesn’t get the QB job and is unwilling to change positions, I guess I could see him taking the Cam Newton route and proving himself at the JUCO level. I’d rather not speculate on something like that before the kid has even made it through his…[Read more]

to clarify, i wasn’t specifically referring to game 1. I’m not comparing Jackson or Costelli to Trevor Lawrence but if either shows that they need to be on the field, it is easy to envision them getting meaningful snaps early in the season and eventually moving to a more prominent role.
I have no doubt that Whit will put the guys on the field…[Read more]

The biggest advantage Brewer has right now is experience. Even though all three are learning a new system, for the most part Brewer just needs to learn new terminology. A post is a post is a “whatever Baylor called it”.
A lot can change between now and fall camp though. A summer throwing to the receivers and digesting what was being thrown at…[Read more]

I feel like we need to temper expectations for Rising, at least for 2021. Unless the timeline has changed, he won’t even start throwing until this summer. To expect him to be 100% at the start of fall camp is a stretch. Labrum’s are tough to come back from for a QB.
Jake Browning at UW also went through the same surgery and was never able to…[Read more]

that would be like choosing which one of your kids is your favourite.
I feel like any DLine anchored by Luther or Star has to be in the discussion. And any year with multiple double-digit sack guys has to be in there also: 2014 (Orchard/Dimick) for example.

as a general rule, i’m okay with your compromise. I think you need to add a couple of exceptions:
1) If the school is put on probation and the student transferring is not involved in the allegations (Mississippi as an example)
2) Any student who is the target of harassment should also be allowed to move on without penalty. I hesitate to put…[Read more]

I feel like the Portal is doing it’s job and self-correcting on it’s own. Look at the number of kids who are still on there because they were not able to find other schools to take them on. That should eventually lead kids to make better decisions on whether to enter (as much as a 19-22 year old can be expected to make the best decisions for his…[Read more]
