3rd Assistant

I was reading Josh Newman’s Q&A with Coach Smith in the Trib and they talked about filling out the coaching staff. With him bringing Eric Peterson from Utah State and adding Demarlo Slocum, he said it will be next week before hiring the 3rd assistant.

Do we assume that if it was going to be a current member of the staff it would have already happened?

I love Tommy Connor and would like to see him retained but I also see the benefit of and importance of Coach Smith bringing in someone he is comfortable with.

My guess is Martinez as the third assistant. For obvious reasons. Plus he’s got those LA contacts

Doubt it. Per NCAA rules, Martinez can retain his same salary and be moved to a basketball operations position because he’s been with the University for longer than a year. Instead, Utah will likely find a coach that is a good recruiter and player development guy.
