Did you ever imagine that you would feel essentially 100 percent confident that the Utes were going to play UCLA, Arizona, and Colorado… and beat them handily?

this program has come a LONG way. If the Utes show up every week we will have beaten BYU, WSU, ASU, Oregon St., Cal, UW, UCLA, UA, and CU… ALL IN THE SAME SEASON! then tack on Oregon, and whoever we play in the postseason and it’ll easily be the best season in team history in terms of who we beat.

      AMAZING!

It is amazing considering where we came from.  We won only one game in 1974 and 1975.  In the late 80s we were horrible at defense.  I remember the game when Scott Mitchell threw for over 600 yards (NCAA record at the time) against AFA and we lost something like 57-49.  There was a joke in those days, “Why is Utah 115th in the nation in total defense?”  The answer was, “Because there are only 115 teams.”  There was a time when BYU beat us 18 out of 20 games.  I remember losing to UCLA 64-16 in 1973.

      Times have changed.

I was at that game against AFA. As usual, Mitchell was unbelievable (in a good way) and the D was also unbelievable (not in a good way). It’s also hard to fathom today, but RES was maybe 25% full in the second half? I remember our original tickets were nosebleeds but we simply walked down and chose from the many available empty East side bleacher benches – remember when it was only/mostly bleachers on the east side, not the real seats like they had on the fancy west side 🙂 – near the 50 on like the 10th row… I could not have imagined today’s program back then. Awesome.
