Does Utah go to the Rose Bowl if …

  I am not on the team (so I can look ahead) but I am also not smart enough to know: Does Utah go to the Rose Bowl if (1) Utah meets Oregon in the Pac12 Championship, (2) Oregon wins, and (3) Oregon goes to the playoff?
  
  Or does the Rose Bowl get to pick a replacement if the Pac12 champion (Oregon in my scenario) goes to the playoff?
  
  Thanks for any help here.

  in 2016, USC went to the Rose despite Colorado winning the South that year. Colorado went to the Alamo and Washington went to the CFP.

    like Sweetness said, USC was ranked ahead of Colorado in the final college football playoff poll, that is why USC went instead of Colorado

  Yeah, I’m pretty sure the rose bowl just gets to pick. The USC/Colorado year was unique. USC had Sam Darnold, a top 10 ranking etc, and Colorado was 10-2. If we finish at 11-1, there’s no way we could picked over. Who else would they take? At best they could get an Arizona state team that finishes at 9-3, otherwise it’s USC or Washington at 8-4 (all best case scenarios).
  
  My bigger worry is we lose, Oregon gets left out of CFP, goes to rose, and we miss out on NY6 and go to the Alamo. This scenario is very real, as there is only one at large NY6 spot, which is the cotton bowl. In that case we’d likely be competing against a 2 loss George/Florida, or possibly like a Baylor or Michigan with 2 losses.
  
  It’s been proven we’re not 1st choice when it comes to bowl games, so I don’t want to go down that road.
  
  Just win baby. Just win and everything will take care of itself.

    It would seem all of the top 10 would go to one of the 12 spots in the NY6. I should think a G5 should be in the top 12 to be in the NY6 otherwise it is a mercy pick but that is not the case. If Oregon and Utah win out they should be something like 5 and 6 before playing each other. The clear history is a top 10 losing to another top 10 should cost you no more than 2 or 3 spots meaning they should both still be top 10. If so, both are in the NY6.

    in that scenario we would be ranked above Fla/UGA/Mich unless we were penalized for playing a CCG agains a top 10 team (we wouldnt)
    
    Not that they would pick us over those guys for sure. But we would probably be ranked top 6 in that scenario

  2016 was an anomaly IMO – right now there’s no other PAC team ranked close enough to jump us if we lose the CCG.
  
  Rose Bowl must take the PAC-12 Champion, unless the Champion goes to the Playoff, in which case Rose Bowl will take the team they deem next best. In 2016 they went off of rankings and chose USC, without anyone to jump us in rankings it would be Utah or Oregon depending on who wins and who the CFPC chooses to go to the playoffs. Worst case we get the Alamo Bowl if we win the next 3 games.

  Utah has to win out is my gut feeling and they will guarantee a Rose Bowl. Chaos would have to happen in 1-5 for a CFP.

  I think there are three tiers for P5s and the NY6. The top four go to the playoffs, next conference champions not in the playoffs, last are runners up with high ranking. There is an SEC exception where the runner up can jump into any of the higher tiers. If Utah wins the conference championship, I expect they will be in the second tier and be in the NY6. If we loose the conference championship, Utah is in the third tier with slim NY6 hopes.
  For me, as an old timer, I am happy to hope for the Rose Bowl. I have envied that since I was a small kid, the playoffs are great, but they are a new thing and 3 of 4 go home sad. I like the Rose and I like our chances there.

  The rule is, if the Pac-12 champion gets selected by the CFP, the Rose Bowl is NOT obligated to take the CCG loser. But that said, they CANNOT just take anybody they want. They MUST choose from either the remaining team(s) with the highest league W/L record, or the teams within one loss of the team(s) with the highest W/L record.
  
  So essentially, if both Utah and Oregon win out…
  
  …and Utah loses to Oregon in the CCG…
  
  …and Oregon gets selected by the CFP…
  
  …the Rose Bowl MUST select either the 8-1 Utes, or any other Pac-12 team that finishes 7-2 or better. And at the current pace, Stan, UWa, Cal, Wash St, Ariz, Ariz St, and Colo already have more than 2 losses, so they’d be automatically eliminated from contention. And if Oregon does win out, then that would eliminate Oregon St from Rose Bowl contention as well, as they already have 2 losses now. And one more loss for USC and/or UCLA would also automatically eliminate them from Rose Bowl contention, under the scenerio where Utah wins out. And by that standard, the Rose Bowl WILL be obligated to take the Utes.

    Great information – this is why I love this board. Given the “team within one loss of the team(s) with the highest record” rule, under the scenario described (Utah winning out but losing to Oregon in the CCG) would Utah have two conference losses (USC and Oregon in the CCG) or would the CCG not count in the “team within one loss” rule? In other words, is the leage W/L record based on the regular season only or does it include the result of the CCG?
    
    Of course, Go UTES!!! Win out and make this line of reasoning irrelevant.

      CCG games don’t count in “league standings”. So if Oregon won, they’d STILL be 9-0, and Utah would STILL be 8-1 in league play.
      
      However, our “poll” standing would certainly take a hit.
      
      Another thing of note, in the event of some future CCG game, where a 9-0 Utah team beats a 7-2 UWa team, where that post CCG game UWa team finishes with a CFP ranking somewhere in the Top-10, and Ariz or Colo finish behind Utah in the standings at 8-1, but have a final CFP ranking of somewhere down in the #20-25 range (due to a poor non-conference record), or not even ranked at all, the Rose Bowl must STILL select the 8-4 Ariz or Colo team ahead of the 7-2/Top-10 CCG-losing UWa team. And that’s because 7-2 is not within 1 game of a 9-0 team. So even though UWa would be the more attractive opponent, they cannot edge out the aforementioned less-desirable Wildcats or Buffaloes.
      
      That’s the rules.
