If you haven’t been following, the No. 1 OL recruit this cycle, Felix Ojo, just committed to Texas Tech. He had visited Utah, but it never seemed like we were a contender.

Just read this article on his big deal ($5.1M over 3 years) with Tech. It says near the bottom that “Sources told ESPN that Texas and Utah were among the programs that offered Ojo the most substantial revenue-share contracts in the final stages of his recruitment.”

Anybody know if there’s truth to that? And if we did offer cash, how much? I thought our approach was that the cash went to current players and immediate impact transfers, not recruits.

In any case, I’m glad we didn’t give $5M to an OL guy, no matter how good he is. That’s 8.3% of the yearly budget for all sports going to a non-QB.

Yes. Utah offered him a very good NIL deal. Which is why most recruiting experts felt it was down to Utah and Texas for him. I don’t know exactly what Utah was offered. Utah keeps a very tight lip on NIL deals. I was just told it was very competitive to other P4 offers. Tech came out of nowhere with ridiculous numbers.

Texas Tech is the BYU of college football. They have new money funding their NIL and are willing to significantly overpay to get top players.

This isn’t over yet. Texas may counter if they get desperate enough.

The good news is Utah can take the NIL money they had sent aside for him and use it on another high profile recruit down the road.

And to be clear, that would have come out of the $20.5 million/year? Are NIL and revenue sharing the same thing now?

They are not the same. The 20.5MM comes directly from the school. NIL is from outside vendors and is not influenced by the school *wink wink*

Think of Patrick Mahomes. He gets his salary from the Chiefs and then gets NIL from companies like State Farm. The difference at the college level is that Bob’s Used Car Emporium is making deals with kids who aren’t on campus yet to help the school acquire players.

This is why the sharing is pointless. Schools with extremely deep pocket alumni or fans like Tech and BYU are still going to bypass it with independent NIL deals.

Isn’t A&M the big budget no results team alongside BYU?

Isn’t BYU the BYU of College Football?
