Close call with a loss against them in 1927 and then we blew them out in 1981. Go Utes!

I remember the 81 game. Kenny Vierra was our Freshman QB who led us to a shutout victory over Northwestern in Chicago.  The score was something like 42-0.  But, that was almost 40 years ago.

1981 would have been smack in the middle of The Streak–a record setting losing streak of 30 + games for Northwestern, running from 1979-1982. It was broken the year before I went there. We call that The Dark Ages and 1995-present, The Modern Era. The coach who broke the streak and earned Big Ten COY for getting NU to three wins was none other than Dennis Green. Yes, he was who we thought he was.

I love learning stuff like this about other schools! Thank you for sharing.

1981 was back when few games were on TV and I listened to Bill Marcroft’s call on the radio.

Northwestern was indeed in the middle of one of the longest losing streaks in college football history, but was a slight favorite over the visiting Utes.  But Utah stomped the Wildcats 42-zip.

I remember that game. Northwestern used to be bad at football, epically bad, like Cumberland College bad.

Utah literally hasn’t played Northwestern in my lifetime (I wasn’t born until 1986: five years after they last played the Wildcats). Let’s hope the football team does better against Northwestern than our basketball team did in the Wooden Legacy Tournament (we lost 79-57).
