I was scared after we got the Fiesta Bowl bid that we were going to lose Whitt. He had all but decided to coach BYU. Fortunately, he decided to stay and as they say, “The rest is history.” Whitt is a good man and a great coach. Things I admire about him:
– Tough as nails and he shows that to his players by example.
– Humble. When he was the new D coordinator at Utah, they had an after-practice – meet the players where kids could get autographs, etc. I took my teenage son up there. I pointed out Whitt and said – he is the defensive coordinator – get his autograph. My son went up to him and he said, “I am a nobody, you want to get the autographs of the players.” He then signed his hat.
– Learned from the best. He said that he learned from Edwards, Mac, UM, and mostly his dad.
– He may go down in college history as the best developer of players. He never had one 5-star athlete. He took lesser players and developed them into NFL players.
Here is a video that I found that honors KW as the winningest coach in Utah football.
