Disclaimer: I’m not trying to count chickens before they hatch. And I don’t follow NFL draft stuff very closely.

I haven’t seen serious NFL talk about Devon Dampier, but I know that a big year in P4 can change things. How good would this season have to be for him to declare for the draft instead of playing in the 2026 season? How likely do you think that is?

Unless he completely flops, I’d love to have him for two years. Although if he leads us to a conference championship and that gets him into the draft conversation, I’d consider it worth it if he only played one season.

If he does return for the 2026 season, how many of the backups will stay? I can’t imagine we hold on to very many guys; QB is that position that’s been impacted so much by the portal because in normal cases, only one guy gets real playing time per team.

I figure that, if Dampier returns for 2026, QB2 will stay but QB3 will not, however that ends up shaking out between Wilson and Ficklin. I’d love to see them both thrive as Utes, but one of them will have to leave if they want to see meaningful playing time.

1 year = a great team (most likely in the CFP). I’d take that 10 out of 10 times.

Assuming it’s not cause he had a career-ending injury for said 1 year.

If he’s awesome and has a solid draft grade he’ll do 1 year.

If he’s good, but not draftable, 2 years

If he stinks and gets benched he transfers.

Good to great college QB without some of the key NFL qualities (size, arm talent) is the sweet spot. Our last 3 real QBs (Huntley, Rising, Dampier) all seem to fit in this category. With NIL these guys will play college ball longer.

He could endu p being a very good college QB (I hope so). But,I don’t think he is NFL material. But, what do I know? I am lookin forward to seeing what he can do this season.
