Yeah, the pumping in noise allegation is bogus. I’ve been to plenty of games at LES, they do the same thing as us. Fans going wild and the speakers playing some song leading up to the snap. As soon as the players are set, the noise stops and it’s pure crowd. Plus, it’s not every single snaps. It’s really only 3rd down jumps.

This is the video that the zoobs have been passing around complaining about the noise. They aren’t very introspective to see that it happens in every stadium including their own. RES noise is real.

Don’t forget how electric those offenses were with both of them in there. When cam went down against Baylor, the oxygen literally left RES. Sure, for some it was because they were exhausted that he was hurt again but I think for the majority, it was because we knew we lost someone special. I wish they would have gone to the NFL but only because I know that because they stayed and got hurt, their chances are now gone. Maybe if they leave, they are still playing. As far as the backups go Barnes was literally the perfect backup. I think we win 9 games last year if we could have kept him. He wasn’t a star and he definitely wasn’t a starter at our level, but he was MUCH better than a true freshman. No knock on Wilson.

I think it’s great. They talked about how Snowden may play offense but he is very likely to return kicks and punts. I love that! It’s been a revolving door at that position since Covey left. I can see Barton playing in goal line situations. I don’t think it says anything about the offense not having weapons there, I think it just throws in a bit of flair that could potentially confuse a defense in a big play situation.

So what does that say about the players we already have on offense? Not good enough that we have to move good players on defense to offense to make up for the lack of athleticism and talent on offense? That’s what the moves would indicate to me.

Not only that, the portal transfers they brought in during the offseason are not living up to what they had expected, anticipated or at least hoped for. Maybe I’m looking too much into it, but that would be my conclusion.

During Big XII media days, I heard Whit mention Lander Barton may see time on Offense, too. If it’s strategic, and limited, I’m all for it. The thing is, they will have to play enough offensive snaps where the ball doesn’t always go to them so that they can become actual weapons. Otherwise, the defense knows who to key in on.

Personally I’m not a huge fan of having our best corner, and arguably our best player on defense, play more snaps than he needs to. I guess I understand the argument that if he can score points on offense then he should play, but it also increases fatigue and chances of injury.

On your final point, you forget how complex Ludwig’s offense was to learn for newcomers. No one but Rising was going to be successful for us in 2022.

I agree with everything else you said.

follow up: imagine you are a transfer QB in Jan/Feb of 2022 and looking at Utah as a possible destination.

That returning offensive roster may have been as loaded as any in Utah history. QB1 spot open for the taking on an offense that just put up 36.1 per (#14) the previous season? I think you’d be able to get all the top transfers in the country to take your call.

I just don’t believe Rising was the only QB capable of producing that 2022 result. We know there wasn’t anyone currently on the roster. But had Rising announced he was leaving after that Ohio State RB, I think the staff would have been able to find someone who was capable of stepping in and running the team from day 1.

It’s true that you would expect about a 7-5 2022 if Rising had moved on and Utah had stuck with their existing QB room instead of bringing in a starter – for a really attractive spot considering most of the team was coming back from a Rose Bowl squad. The difference is that you would also expect the 2023 & 2024 iterations to have an experienced, multi-year starter leading the team. And as many on here remind us, competent QB play with all else being equal would have had those teams making runs at the playoffs.

I would have traded a “down” year in 2022, knowing in advance that Utah was breaking in a new QB, for the expectation of big 2023/24’s in a heartbeat. And that would have been long before 2024 became the least fun year of my 37 years watching Utah football.
