  He’s reportedly being paid over $3mil to transfer. Imagine paying a player over 3 million dollars for one year. College football as a competitive sport is quickly dying. It’s going to be a pay-to-compete sport in no time.
  
  I hope USC pays 10 million dollars and ends up in the Alamo Bowl.

    Not only that, but if I understand the rules correctly (and someone correct me if I’m wrong) it’s too late to transfer without having to sit out a year. So they bring in Addison at the very last second making it impossible for any of their other star receivers to go anywhere. Talk about a program that is all about winning and doesn’t care about doing what’s best for any of the players.

    What do they have on defense, and what are they doing to shore that up? If nothing, this “arms race” is sure to fail. If they get a bunch of ohfensive stars, what good does it do if there is only one football? Will there be problems in the lockerroom if prima donnas are not getting the ball enough? For the sake of the Utes and the other relative “have nots” in the NIL race, I hope that kind of stuff is the result.

  Your $10 million is conservative. According to my sources the USC boosters were already over $20 million, now probably closer to $25 million. This is a #%^* arms race.

  Remember when the Lakers went out a signed every aging megastar and everyone penciled them in for the championship?

  You still have to prove it in the field. If things start going south on them there is zero motivation for them to turn it around. They’ll just take the cash and shut it down for the season
  
  Having an Alpha at all 22 positions is not always a good thing. You need role players willing to sacrifice for the team. USC doesn’t have that. They are all in it for themselves

    I get the point you’re making but the lakers did win a championship (albeit the covid championship) with their aging superstar roster in 2020…

  I’m dying to see what happens when some Alabama booster pays a player $5m and he ends up being a third-stringer. Does that booster get on his speed-dial to Nick Saban and demand playing time for him?
  
  Then, the kid gets discouraged and an LSU booster poaches the kid for another $1m, and because the transfer portal is the wild-west right now he’s able to transfer to LSU along with the Bama booster’s $3m.
  
  Ya… what could go wrong?
  
  Personally, I’m all for college athletes trying to earn a buck, but if I want to watch professional athletes I’ll just turn my attention to the NFL. They should be careful…

    I’m still going to die on the hill of…they were already getting paid a lot. To have their parents go create the same experience for their kid with their own after tax dollars – top level coaching, state of the art facilities, state of the art food and nutrition, trainers, weight lifting programs, game atmosphere of a stadium paid for by the taxpayers and decades of TV deals building up the brand – IT WOULD COST THE PARENTS GOBS OF MONEY.
    
    Now, in the NFL, in order to secure your Name Image Likeness potential, you have to go through a draft and sign a contract so that the NFL will allow you in it’s league and allow for parity and for teams to have a return on investment of players they invest in. Now, University’s can spend tens of thousands on man hours and travel for recruiting to secure a player, only for another school to buy that player if he rises to the top. It’s a sad state of affairs IMO and will get worse.
    
    My only hope is that Utah has built a value to kids to develop them for the long run and can continue to compete as the underdog that punches above its weight.

  He entered the portal before the deadline, so he can play this year. However, this def helps SC, no doubt, but receivers and QBs other than last year has never been their problem. My 2 cents, it takes time to establish a culture in a program. Utah has 5 long, big, talented corners coming back this year. Assuming health, I think we can match SC, especially at home. Toughness cannot be underestimated. I would take out hungry, talented corners all day v Diva WR. The pressure on these guys to perform is going to be crazy high. And LR is a baby compared to Whitt, who has made his living putting up huge numbers in a conference that doesn’t care about defense. I’m still not that concerned even after this move.

  USC’s always been elite in the skill-positions…..Their issue last year was in the trenches & this has barely been addressed in the transfer portal….. I don’t envision this being fully rectified in one year, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.
  
  Not to mention Riley establishing a brand-new culture for the first time in his career.
  
  I’m confident we can outscore them & win comfortably.

  ☝🏻 This. Reason Bama is so successful, is that they have top level talent at all positions. And Saban preaches that no one is bigger than the team. LR is all about flash. He’s about to find out real quick how hard it is.

  There could be a negative effect for situations like this. This kid (hats off to him) gets is 3mil, but the other kids on the team didn’t get that much. So they are jeoulous or resentful or who knows what. Interesting to see how that translates to a “team” mentality.

  Last year USC had a couple of very good QBs, several very good WRs, and a WR that was as good as any in the country in London. But football is complex and Utah found a way to beat USC even with those advantages. I like our balance of good offense and good defense and great culture.
