ParticipantHow good is Dampier in the throw game? Do we come out throwing a lot in the non conference games? Keep Dampier healthy for the conference? See if the receivers are capable of getting separation in man to man? Make the defense respect the pass?
We know Dampier is a great running QB. I think a lot of the offensive success will be based on keeping the defense from stacking the box. Last two years our throw game had 0 respect. UCLA will stack the box and make Dampier throw. I hope we come out throwing and get some big plays. Dampier could be more dangerous in the pocket then taking off with the man to man coverage. I’m excited to see it all play out. If Dampier can throw the offense will be hard to stop.

ParticipantHow much Utah throws would seem to depend on how much confidence Kyle has in the QB and the throw game. With Brian Johnson, Huntley and Rising, his confidence was relatively high. With other QBs, not so much.

ParticipantOne good thing about opening up with a good pac12 team like UCLA is that Beck should be able to call any and all the plays they have practiced, including RPO, designed QB runs, and passes. It would be a mistake to base play calls on protecting Dampier from injury. He is a solid built football player, and his running ability is what makes him special, not his passing.
Watching replays of last years New Mexico game vs Arizona, Dampier is very good at passing, especially on the run, but at this point I would not say he is elite with fitting the ball into tight spaces. This year is going to be all about Dampier improving his pocket passing, decision making, and passing accuracy. He is 5′ 10″ so he almost always needs a passing lane to see the receiver, and get the pass off. This is where we will find out if the O-line is as hyped at protecting the QB, as well as run blocking.

ParticipantI went and watched the full game of New Mexico vs Utah St last year. Jason Beck/Devon Dampier basically just make the call based on the numbers in the box. There were 2-3 times on 3rd and long Utah St was protecting against the throw and they called a QB draw and DD picked up the 1st down.
I don’t expect DD to be an elite thrower, but he doesn’t need to, he just needs to be able to read the defense and understand where the advantage is.
I’m trying not to drink the kool-aid but man, if DD’s execution pans out, Utahs offense combined with a Scalley defense is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

ParticipantI have heard some people say they don’t feel great about this year because Dampier hasn’t really proven himself at a high level yet, and his passing stats are suspect. It’s hard to argue with that. When you compare him to our recent, non-Rising quarterbacks, though, I think he looks pretty good. His running/scrambling skills look amazing, and he does seem to be able to hit open receivers when he is not running for his life (and sometimes when he is). He also seems like a gamer. I’m cautiously optimistic. I like SkoUtes take on how Beck/Dampier will handle defenses, and I hope that is how things work out.

ParticipantUtah’s offense will only be successful with a credible passing attack. The defenses Utah will face are good enough to stymie the running game if they don’t have to worry about the passing attack.
I have no idea if he will pass well enough. I’m looking forward to finding out and hoping for a stellar offense.

D T
ParticipantDD had NFL-like passes in the Spring game, but then had that sure pick dropped…..Mixed bag, but I’m 100% optimistic, particularly after he’s operated against our D so extensively.

ParticipantI agree Uteanooga. We need to be able to throw the ball to be successful on offense. Sometimes escaping the rush from the pocket can open up some big runs as well. Teams stacking the box will have a lot of 1 on 1 downfield and a running QB can pick up 1st downs and make big plays out of nothing. I think that will be DD biggest attribute. Last year IW waited to long to take off.
