The NFL is a purer sport than CFB because you can count on players to stay with their teams a lot longer than these college kids.
I hate the NFL, and I’m feeling like it would be more fun to be a fan of than CFB at this point.
Why can’t these over-sized children be signed to multi-year deals?

I’m not a troll. I’m a diehard Ute that’s been a season ticket holder for 15 years (for basketball and football). I’m also an active member of the church. I genuinely don’t understand what you’re saying.

If he wasn’t getting paid, he obviously wouldn’t be going there. I don’t think that means the church values winning more than its principles though.
Clark Gilbert didn’t say the university wouldn’t allow pay for play. They obviously had a bunch of NIL deals in place for years before he even made that comment. Per the above, he said that it…[Read more]

AMEN!!! Utah fans who want to s*** on other fans for not being loyal need to read your post! NIL is #1 problem in college football these day. As far as Utah football, I say Whittingham right now is the #1 problem in the program. I think many Utah players could have been salvaged and stay at Utah if it wasn’t for Whitt’s poor mismanagement of…[Read more]

Essentially you need to give the players the power to collectively bargain, i.e. a players union.
Right now e are in the wild west. It’s only going to be this way for a short time. Sometime soon players will be paid employees and will need to sign contracts.

Is this a troll attempt? It seems like you’re coming at this in bad faith. You know exactly what I mean. If you don’t, you can take the night and figure it out.

I don’t understand your example. What do you mean by standing in the church?

There is no going back. Frankly, the idea of investors purchasing teams is probably the best path forward, if it leads to a super-conference that is NFL-lite.

Same here (regarding MLB)! I used to scour over the box scores in the newspaper, knew stats of many players, watched the standings and games religiously. Then free agency happened. Then the strike happened. Then my interest died, almost completely. Maybe it was for the best, as I devoted way too much time to it.
The same has happened to me with…[Read more]

How do you reign back in players getting money outside of the school? Now I’m hearing about investors purchasing 50% of college teams is in the work to get more funding to the schools.

Why? Because you believe I should. Here’s one example to satiate your appetite. Standing in the church. We deem these actions as a negative representation of our faith, and if you continue to engage in these actions, there will be repercussions. Seriously, was it that hard to actually come up with that yourself?

I think the only hope is for a super-conference to form that becomes a de facto professional league. It would then have some rules about contracts, salaries, etc. The current model is wholly unsustainable. NIL is the death of college football as we knew it…hopefully, it is not the death of college football altogether.

If you’re going to argue that they could/should enforce it, it’s definitely on you to provide an example of how they could do that legally.

This is similar to what happened for me with MLB.
In the early 90s as a Pirates fan it really turned me off when Bonds, Bonilla, Van slyke, Bell, Drabek, Belinda, Smiley, Carlos Garcia, Rafael Belliard, Jose Lind were broken up due to $$$$. That was the end of MLB for me. I attend maybe one or two Rockies games a year. And Sid Bream, you’re dead…[Read more]

Yes, I fear your feelings are shared by many (including me). If things are not reigned-in in a balanced way, I think a lot of fans are going to turn the whole thing off.

A combination of the networks and naked self-interest by players is going to kill college football as we know it. Without any guardrails or ground rules that everyone has to play by, then fans’ entertainment dollars are going to go elsewhere and college football will become a worse version of the XFL.

Agreed. NIL is the wild west. There are no real rules. It is a mess, and it is going to kill the sport. The beauty of college football (in my opinion) has been getting to know the players, see them develop, and cheer for the alma mater. I liked that the players were trying to play their way to the next level and a paycheck.
I LOVED Utah…[Read more]

I’ve read everything you wrote, but I can’t tell if your issue is w/ NIL in general or if you’re just discriminating against religious institutions. Based on everything you wrote, it sounds like both.

The argument I made is they shouldn’t allow it. I’m sure there are ways they could enforce it, but again, it’s not my job to provide you with examples on that. If or Notre Dame wanted to stop such things, they most certainly could.
Where we are, NIL is a cancer on college athletics. I’ve never donated to any collective nor will I. So…[Read more]
