This is why I’m a fan of Harlan looking at Brian Johnson – he’s been around the league and had a hand in developing Prescott, Hurts, and now Daniels.

salty-ute replied to the topic Utah Might Not Win Another Game This Season in the forum Football 8 months, 1 week ago
If our coaching staff continues to be stubborn, we will continue to lose.
• playing Cam because of blind loyalty and in spite of the fact that he’s the worst option when he’s unhealthy
• play-call a predictable offense, with lack of creativity…. e.g. insisting that we have the o-line to bully people with the 4th & 1 type of calls up the mid…[Read more] -

I don’t think you should punt on the season just yet. I think you gotta start Wilson the next 2-3 weeks and try to get Cam completely healed up. If Utah wins the next 2-3 games and you got a healthy Cam, I think you have to play the quarterback which gives you a better chance to win now, which I believe to be Cam. Utah just has to keep playing o…[Read more]

follow up:
Anyone notice that Vegas’s offense hasn’t missed a beat the last two games? Imagine having a fully qualified backup who was ready to take over if the starter got injured or was otherwise unavailable for any reason. I guess that can only happen at deep pocketed universities like Texas or UNLV.

There is no building for the future in college football. The roster tuns over too much and you can’t expect day 1 starters to even be on the team next year. Rising should be done, but other than that you aren’t replacing anyone.

We have a 13 year play caller serving as a offensive analyst. You could easily put the play calling duties in his hand because it can’t get much worse than it already is.

Agreed. The issues didn’t look like Xs and Os to me, it was that this team doesn’t look right in terms of execution and discipline. We have injuries, sure, and that is hurting us, but this team doesn’t look prepared for a second year in a row, and 2 years in a row is no longer just freak bad luck.

I’d rate the possibility of Odom considering Utah about a 3 out of 10. He’s going to get an SEC/B1G offer after this season now that the stink of how his tenure ended at Missouri is gone. Both UNLV and Missouri are historically tough places to win so he should get a pretty look.
The offense Odom ran with Drew Locke (Heupel as OC) seemed pretty…[Read more]

The coaches are very unlikely to do this. Playing for the future would mean not just benching Rising, but also playing younger players over other upperclassmen. And if we do that, we go from average to bad.

It’s time for a reset –
Reset expectations that is – The hype had us believing playoffs or bust and I think that is why I have been so disappointed for the last two weeks.
What I learned last night is that it is time for me at least to revise my expectations – I think at this point what will make me more content this season is watching us build…[Read more]

It’s the same team that started the year. There were just 3 really bad opponents to make it seem better than it was. Oklahoma State is interesting for comparison though because you have two long-tenured coaches who seem to have lost the narrative at exactly the same time.
At this point, I’m trying to decide if two things are true…[Read more]

What do you think of Odom at UNLV? He was at Mizzou for four years before getting canned but actually had a decent record there. He’s got deep ties back east and could probably make Utah’s case to a different type of recruit.

I agree, though I haven’t paid attention to any G5 teams outside of BSU (well mostly Jeanty) so I’m not aware of which coaches, if any, would fit that mold.

Human psychology is an interesting thing. When the highest-paid player on the team and the “face of the franchise” is a guy whose best days are behind him, you’re going to have problems. The fact is that money, as we all know, plays a huge role in this equation. Rising hasn’t done anything for years. To a young, financially insecure adult,…[Read more]

Right, like I said, long shot. My point being I don’t want the reigns to be handed off to Scalley without looking at other options first. Age isn’t as much of a concern to me, I’d take 2 to 5 years from a coach if it meant he elevated the team beyond a conference championship. I’m no longer a fan of hiring a coach with the plan to be there for 2…[Read more]

If you really wanted him, the time to get Cignetti was after last season. He’s not moving from Indiana until he gets offered one of the top 10 jobs like DeBoer did when he moved on from Washington.
I realize there haven’t been a lot of hiring opportunities since I started being a Utah fan in 1988 but what you need to try to replicate is the…[Read more]
