ParticipantDo we have a shot?
-
SLC-UteFan
ParticipantIt would be his 3rd team – does he have issues? Would it be worth it?

Participantthis is exactly my concern^

ParticipantHey, we got one good year out of Tavion Thomas. Maybe we can get a good year out of this guy.

ParticipantYes. Utah isn’t a magnet for 5* WRs. Beggars can’t be choosers. Take the chance I say. But I hear TTU is trying to keep him. So lots of work to be done.
-
//r00t4Utes
ParticipantWell, he was with TTU his freshman year he’s leaving TAMU now. So, if TTU is still trying to keep him , it might explain how they lost him. No one with TTU knows he’s not on the team anymore.
but seriously, I would never complain about getting 5 star talent, especially at WR.

ParticipantCome on guys…we had a guy, Dorian Singer, who was a year removed from being an All PAC 12 First Team WR and we couldn’t exploit his outstanding capabilities. Based on that, I’m not going to lose any sleep whether we are able to recruit some HS 5 Star kid.

ParticipantNo offense Miami Ute, but I see ZERO validity in that line of thinking.
First and foremost, I’m not too concerned about the past when it comes to getting as many bites at the apple when it comes to 4-5 star WR’s coming to Utah.
Unfortunately for Singer, his 1 and only season at Utah coincided with one of the most bizarre and disjointed years at the QB position in program history.
Not to mention that Utah now has Jason Beck at OC, Devon Dampier at QB and an entirely new offensive system. Landing this kid could potentially be huge. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!!
-
Anfernee
ParticipantRising and Singer would have been very special but we all know what happened. But Dampier is also special in my opinion. We have a whole new offensive staff with new energy. I’m excited and hopeful guys will want to be a part of it.

ParticipantWhen was the last time a WR put up impressive numbers at Utah?
-
2008 National Champ
Participant2024 – Dorian Singer, 53 catches, 702 yards, 1 score
2017 – Darren Carrington, 70-980-6
2013 – Dres Anderson, 53-1002-7
2009 – David Reed, 81-1188-5
2008 – Freddie Brown, 77-900-7
2006 – Derrek Richards, 60-717-6
2005 – Travis Latendresse, 55-810-8Depends on what you consider impressive but that’s the entire list of receivers during Whitt’s 21 years who put up seasons with greater than 50 catches and 700 receiving yards. Receivers who hit only one of those benchmarks:
2022 – Devaughn Vele 55-695-5 (TE Kincaid 70-890-8)
2021 – Britain Covey 52-514-3 (TE Kuithe 50-611-6)
2018 – Britain Covey 60-637-1
2016 – Tim Patrick 45-711-5
2011 – Devonte Christopher 42-663-5
2010 – Jereme Brooks 51-633-4, Devonte Christopher 39-660-6
2009 – Jereme Brooks 56-696-7
2008 – Bradon Godfrey 56-556-4
2007 – Bradon Godfrey 50-524-3, Derrek Richards 57-635-3
2005 – John Madsen 55-672-6, Brian Hernandez 39-702-3-

ParticipantA lot of these are good, but the only one that strikes me as unusually impressive is David Reed leading the pack with Terrance Cain and I think Jordan Wynn throwing to him. By memory, Dres also impresses. Looking down this list I mostly see could’ve beens. Looking at some recent stats, putting up 1,000 yards will make about a top 30 receiver that year. Putting up 700 will put you in the top 110 or so. Given the timescale I see this list as concerning. It’s remarkable that during the time period we’re discussing we have enjoyed as much success as we have. And I wouldn’t want to see our 2nd place producer in these years.

2008 National Champ
ParticipantI had to keep dropping the dividing line just to get the list that big. Over the course of a 12 game season, those benchmarks would equate to 4.1 catches and 58 yards per.
For comparison with other former Pac-12 schools, to get the same list of 22 you have to go back to (2013 would average 2 per season):
Arizona – 2009 (The RichRod offenses were very run heavy), 7 from 2021 on
Arizona State – 2009 (This surprised me but the last few years haven’t been good), 3 from 2021 on
California – 2011 (even with only 8 during the Wilcox years from 2017 on)
Colorado – 2003 (weird case. 20 from 2009 on, none from 2004-2008. some truly bad offenses)
Oregon – 2005 (the Chip Kelly offenses didn’t produce impressive passing totals)
Oregon State – 2006 (3 years of nothing from Gary Anderson)
Stanford – 1998 (someone had to offset WSU and make Whitt look pass happy)
UCLA – 2008 (another surprise. always seemed to throw more than the results show), 3 from 2021 on
USC – 2013 (came close in the 6 game covid year which would have made it 2014)
Washington – 2010
Washington State – 2017 (24 in 7 full seasons? nuf said)The average would be 2008 so four less years than it took Whitt’s offenses.

ParticipantMy point is that the whole “star system” is irrelevant. All of the Bluebloods routinely bring in numerous 5 star and high 4 star recruits. At the end of the season, a bunch of those have underperformed or under delivered and find themselves in the portal. Yeah, some hit, but most don’t, at least with their original teams.

Need to get this guy!

ParticipantLudwig’s offense took a couple years to figure out and understand. Under Whitt it has always been run first. We haven’t had a gunslinger type QB that is throw first. Rising wasn’t a great downfield QB.
Obviously the offense was not designed for WR to get big numbers. Two NFL guys Vele and Patrick didn’t have big numbers.
I focused in on receivers last year to see if they were getting open and separation. There was a lot of contact and grabbing at the line of scrimmage. Big12 officials are pretty lax on holding. Bigger more physical receivers have a better chance to get free early. Z. Williams impressed me with his size and ability to break free early. More motion and the threat of a running QB should help and a simplified offense.

Unless BYU desperately needs the yards.

Participant“Big12 officials are pretty lax on holding.”
Except that one game deciding call on some press handplay against a front running team.
Felt like Larry Scott was back.

ParticipantAmen Yergi. Let’s wait until the last drive to start calling it.

ParticipantI’m not surprised, but it looks like he just used Utah to get more from TT.
