Dang.
Damuni Barton Reid is a pretty good 1,23(in. No particular order.
What do we have behind em’?
Sione Fotu is great and the clear number 4 (former starter before his mission)
After Sione the next linebacker was Medlock.
The scary thing is that we will lose Reid and Damuni after 2024 and probably Barton (NFL)
That leaves us Sione Fotu, Josh Calvert(who just can’t gain the weight), Owen Chambliss (who has essentially no experience) for 2025.
That is currently all the scholarship linebackers on the team.
The whole program gets overhauled after Utah wins the Natty next year.
The portal giveth and the portal taketh away.
If Utah needs LBs the portal is full of goods ones.
Utah will be loaded with talent all over the field in 25’ thanks to the portal and a stocked NIL collective
As I look at the LBers, Barton and Damuni weigh in the 240s. Reid is a starter exception weighing in the 220s. Medlock and Fotu are in the 220s. For LBers, Utah may prefer that they are bigger and Reid is an exception. Possibly, LBers that can’t get their weight up run a risk in our system if there are other LBers that are bigger.
I get that it is hard for Medlock and Fotu to wait another year for a chance to start when they could start next year at lesser Big 12 teams. But Utah has recently gone to the portal to get bigger, experienced LBers as needed. Ability to gain weight may weigh in.
Leaea is not on the roster, is he on a mission? Being in the 230s in HS may give him a easier path to 240s.
Maybe it’s time we make an offer to Bo Tate from Corner Canyon. He committed to Baylor. But, I understand from sources close to his family, he would jump at an offer from Utah. We need to move quickly on this one if we want to do it.
As a general rule, taking too many kids from a single HS during a recruiting cycle is not a good idea. Unless that HS is at the level of Mater Dei or IMG Academy, not all of their players are P5 quality even though they might have good HS stats.
