First off, I want to say that I am really happy that Rising is QB1 now. That’s not to say that I think he is way better than Brewerenly, or that I didn’t like Brewerently as a person or whatever, I just really like what Rising has done. He lost his job due to injury, was beat out because Ludwig promised Brewerently that he’d start (which is why he bolted the second he got benched), had a great attitude the entire time (as another poster noted below… and now he finally has his job back, and he is providing EXACTLY what was missing from this team. He is a leader, something this team was missing on the field when he wasn’t in. I hope that continues as he starts for us going forward, and I’m excited to see what he can do in future years.

Second, and perhaps most importantly is the fact that this team is young. Not as young as they appear to be on paper because of the free 5 game COVID season… but here is the thing about that. Our free COVID season was not the same as everyone else’s free COVID season, we only got 5 games. The three teams we’ve played so far had an entire season of extra experience. In a normal year, an extra 5 games of experience for your entire team would be huge, but this year it’s actually a disadvantage compared to most other teams. We were predicted to do super well because we had so much production returning (most projections included Brewerently’s production from years ago)… and our most productive RB tragically passed away, that has to have some effect on how a team performs.

This team has some promising young players, and our recruiting rankings are improving (not sure if the overall quality of player is actually improving or not).

Ultimately, these last three games mean nothing, and I hope that Ludwig and Whitt have been holding back schematically (on both sides of the ball) in order to secure as much advantage as possible when playing USC at their place. I’m sure that Whitt wants that game more than any. You have to wonder if he is holding back a bit to squeeze out any possible advantage he can. I don’t necessarily believe this, but it might be true.

Yes, Harding needs to be shown the door. Yes, we should not buy into offseason hype from people who have no reason to be honest or objective about how things are actually going. Coaches/fans/mysterious insiders have no reason to tell it like it actually is in the offseason.

Yes we haven’t been very good. There is a small possibility we’ll be better as the season progresses… and we’ll be just fine in the long run, whether Whitt sticks around for a few more years or not.

      Go Utes!

      Another thought

I don’t like grad transfers coming in and taking jobs from guys that have put in the time, and earned their spot. It just rubs me the wrong way. If they transfer in, and work hard for a year or two before moving up the depth chart I’m good, but I don’t like situations like Brewer’s.

I’d much prefer that we did not leave spots open for transfers of the Brewer type, and only recruited young transfers, or transfers that are replacing others who left unexpectedly.

If Ludwig promised the QB position he needs to be shown the door. Right a long with Harding and Powell for having some of the worst recruited position groups. Zero reason for Utah not to be physical upfront.

I don’t think any promises were made. There didn’t need to be. If you remember when Brewer committed, Bentley had already put his name in the portal and Lisk was done. So Brewer knew that he would only need to beat out a freshman QB who did not play his senior season, a freshman transfer who had sat out the 2020 season recovering from an ACL and a guy who had thrown 6 balls before tearing his labrum – and would not be available for spring ball.

You couldn’t ask for a better place to transfer to if you wanted to showcase yourself for the pros. Rising coming back as quickly as he did, while not unheard of, certainly shouldn’t have kept Brewer from making the move. It didn’t work out for with him or the team so he’s moving on. Pat him on the butt, wish him well wherever he goes to next, and figure out how to rally the team around Rising.

Promise is probably too strong, but I believe the speculation by most is that it was understood that he would start, and that didn’t go over well with certain coaches and players.
