RedRocks replied to the topic Where Does Utah Rank Among National Brands? in the forum Football 2 weeks, 2 days ago
Notre Dame is sponsored by Under Armor and has an artificial turf field.
These two items are often blamed for Utah’s injury woes.
I don’t recall hearing the same about Notre Dame. Granted, I don’t follow them closely. That said, ‘brand power’ and design definitely seem lacking.
As @utegator mentioned above, I too have tried to buy Utah…[Read more]

I want to downvote the first part and upvote the second part, so I guess I’ll do neither.
I would much rather be in the Pac-12; however, you are correct that it was poorly managed.
NIL contracts definitely need to happen. -

I don’t mean to imply that I like the current transient nature of College Football, just that it is an acceleration of a preexisting state.
I would love for our best players to stay here as long as possible.

College football has always been a player carousel.
The carousel is simply moving a bit faster in the transfer era.Players have always come and gone, with limited eligibility and aspirations to leave and play in the NFL.
There have been plenty of Utah players who only really had one good year; that doesn’t mean they weren’t exciting.Sure it is…[Read more]

RedRocks replied to the topic Who is Byrd Ficklin? in the forum Football 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Yeah, we’ve seen this song and dance so many times before. “This time will be different.”
That said, we’ve had some recent years with good offenses. Not sure if the coaches deserve some credit or if all the credit goes to the players who may have just had the skills to mask the coaching deficiencies (Rising, Huntley, Kincaid, Moss, Covey, etc.).

If you are going to keep it around, the politics category should be ‘opt in’ not ‘opt out’.

While it is not my website, I’d be in favor of removing all political posts that don’t directly relate to Utah/college sports.
If people want political information/discussion, there are plenty of echo chambers out there for people to get the feedback they desire.
Discussing politics and religion in a detached online format intended for another…[Read more]

RedRocks replied to the topic Fellow opinions on booing in the NIL Mercenary Era? in the forum Football 6 months ago
A great fanbase is another tool in the recruiting toolbox.
If a player is deciding between two schools that are otherwise equal (money, etc), do you think they would pick the team with fans that are known to boo their players if the others don’t?
If I were a recruit with options, I would certainly consider the fans when making my decision. Who…[Read more]

RedRocks replied to the topic Most likely to remove name from Portal? in the forum Football 6 months, 2 weeks ago
Maybe my memory of former Cam is tainted by recent Cam, but Rose looked just as good or better running than Cam ever did. At least, from an athletic perspective. Maybe not on the option reads.

RedRocks replied to the topic Transfer Portal rumors and so what? in the forum Football 6 months, 2 weeks ago
From a fan perspective, I don’t think the NIL/Portal system is that much different from recruiting in general.
There are many high school recruits that never even see the field. Most fans probably don’t even follow recruiting all that closely. I actually think that more people are paying attention to portal comings and goings than they ever did…[Read more]

I won’t pretend to know, but most people in this ‘industry’ are looking to advance their careers and get paid more.
Sometimes people bite off more than they can chew, or leave success to find failure (Scott Frost, Brian Harsin, Chip Kelly, etc).
I guess you can’t fault them for shooting their shot. Many people have succeeded following this…[Read more] -

This. I’ve been impressed with his ability to catch (almost) everything thrown in his direction and wonder why he doesn’t get more targets.

I have seen a lot of commentary around here lately with a focus on NIL, ‘last straw’, ‘CFB is ruined’, ‘no longer a fan’, etc.
Is the current model a bit of a downer at the moment? Yes.
Does it seem like the Wild West? Also, yes.I respect everyone’s right to ‘fan’ how they would like. This is, after all, entertainment.
If you are not…[Read more] -

Most likely.
Think of someone like LeBron James. He receives a salary as an employee of the Lakers, but he also gets paid by Nike and others for NIL/promotion/etc.

RedRocks replied to the topic 5th String QB in the forum Football 7 months ago
I’d really like to know why Utah has so many injuries lately, especially quarterbacks.
Some like to blame the turf, but many teams play on turf. Some like to blame Under Armor, but there are other teams that use Under Armor.
Having seen some of the injuries on video, there doesn’t really seem to be anything unusual. Cam Risings latest injury…[Read more]

Urban Meyer is probably the best coach Utah has had (so far 😉), but he didn’t stick around very long.
Kyle Whittingham has been a great coach with some glaring blind spots (offense, fan engagement). I am not in the camp that thinks he should be fired or forced out, but I really wish that he would adapt a little bit more on offense.
Throughout…[Read more]

Yeah, that false start penalty made me wonder why those don’t count as a free play for the defense; kind of like how offside is a free play for the offense.
I wonder what it would be like if they were allowed to continue the play and the defense was allowed to accept/reject the penalty.

I can’t bring myself to believe anything like this from Whittingham anymore… The past season and a half have made sure of that.
