Our media members are complete morons, asking questions like “you were recruited by teams like Oregon and LSU… Why did you choose Utah?” and “You committed earlier than you planned, why didn’t you take more time?”.
Why ask questions like that? Obviously Utah doesn’t have the brand name like Oregon or LSU but our own media guys are making it seem like they just can’t believe a 4* kid would come here. Costelli literally paused and then asked “are you asking why I didn’t have more interest in those teams?” after they asked a question about the Cali schools.
We Utah-connected folks are often overly humble. That comes across sometimes as not believing in our strength or worth.
Does my thumbs-downer disagree with my statement? Let’s conversate about it.
Utah is getting recognition as a great place to play football, attain a solid education, experience college life in a beautiful, safe city. Utah is a program with a family centered environment, high character coaches, and a stable atmosphere. Add in the number of players Utah is developing for the NFL, no surprise.
^^^sign him up as a recruiter!
The fact they didn’t ask him “why didn’t you consider going to BYU where Steve Young played QB?” indicates that our media members are actually getting better.
But, yeah, they’re still morons.
I also see the flip side of this question. Listeners love to hear how great we are.
This line of questioning puts the interviewee on the defensive to justify the decision. Then follows the heaps of praise in defense: family, opportunity, connection with the recruiter, outdoors, something different, etc.
I hear it all the time. Moss would get it all the time. Why would you leave FL to come to Utah? He is pretty measured in his response.
I think we are all interested in the “why Utah” question, but sometimes it does come across as cringey in the way it is phrased (or forced).
