I heard today that some draft prognosticators project Wilson over Trevor Lawrence.  I personally don’t believe it.  Nonetheless, Wilson has come out of nowhere to likely become a top-5 pick in the upcoming draft.  So how did Zach go from a mid-level college recruit to here?

      1. Colleges incorrectly evaluated his skills out of high school

      2. He always had good skills, but just needed to mature

      3. He is a smart, hard-working guy and has overachieved

      4. ARod is a remarkable QB coach and helped him improve his skills

      5. He really isn’t that good and the talking heads are all wrong

So what is it?  IMO, it is a bit of 1 and a lot of 3.  I think Utah and others underestimated his potential and I think he has worked his butt off to get where he has.

But, I also think that the NFL guys must have lost the film of his two Utah games. TIC

Anyway you spin it, the kid has come a long way in the last three years.  He will be a millionaire in a few months.

Well it isn’t #4.  ARod is a horrible QB coach!  If he were any good, he would have fixed Travis Wilson’s sidearm throwing motion, and he’d have been drafted.  If anyone gets credit for Zach Wilson, it’s John Beck.

Personally, I think his draft status was a product of putting up video game-like stats ala super weak SOS.  The tdS set a personal record for weakest SOS in the modern era.  That might get him drafted, but it won’t amount to much playing time, nor a very substantive career in the NFL.  Lots of 1st rounders wash out fairly quickly, and ZW really hadn’t been tested.  He won’t be throwing against DBs of the caliber of those Sun Belt and C-USA teams, and, since NFL teams actually practice, he won’t have as much luck as he did vs. Navy either.

I think you add a number 6 and 7 as to why,

      6. His family had the financial resources to send him to John Beck’s quarterback training last spring/summer in California. This takes number 4 out, I do not think ARod had that much influence on him. We know he didn’t influence much with Utah’s quarterbacks.

      7. Last season’s schedule, Zach went up against a lot of weak defenses that would leave receivers open, which made it easier to complete passes and lessen interceptions. Although his training last year did help him improve.

I agree BYU’s schedule was weak and I admit that I don’t see what the NFL teams do. These guys are smart enough to know that BYU played a cupcake schedule, yet they see something there. This is a huge investment. They have closely evaluated everything about him and his abilities.

A massive jump going from playing against college athletes to playing against NFL athletes.  (And it’s even a bigger jump considering BYU lost all the stronger opponents on their schedule and had to replace them with teams from conferences like the Sun Belt.)

Of course he’ll also have better receivers to throw to as well.

Time will tell if Zach can adjust to the pros.

Over 50% of NFL 1st rd drafted QBs flop, so the experts fail more often than not.

More than likely he has been overhyped. Regardless, I wish him the best and hope he is successful. I always root for these kids getting to the next level, but the asshats down south make this so much more difficult by constantly reminding everyone of their first round draft pick. Just like Jimmer, Hill, etc. They can’t just be happy and be quiet.

I’m 100% sure he’s been overhyped, but Trevor lawrence may have been just the same. Lawrence plays on the second most talented roster in the NCAA, against pretty mediocre to bad competition in the ACC. BYU: mediocre talent facing terrible talent = huge numbers and blowouts galore. Clemson: majorly talented playing against mediocre talent = huge numbers and blowouts galore.

For decades, the Y has had an inferiority complex and have been desperate to change their preception.  They have found it is much easier to create a star with very good numbers than it is to create a top level team.  As a result, I have watched for years, a top priority to identiry the best they have on their team and game plan everything around creating a star.  Every few years, they push one thru to national notice based on numbers per game.  Out of that process comes stars like Jimmer that with that system can create hilights.  However, when forced onto a team with winning as a priority against equal competition, many of these stars struggle.  He will see the attention now but I think his career will be similar to Jimmer.  Remember, in the two games against Utah, he threw more TDs to Utah than to the Y.  It may not get better in the NFL (that is Not For Long, if you don’t get it done)

I am not buying the hype on Zach. I hope for his sake he can be a success but I don’t buy it with the level of competition he faced last year.

This is going to be Jimmer 2.0
