QBs: Brewer currently “quite a bit ahead of everyone else”

  Whitt talked recently about the spring QB battle. He made it very clear Charlie Brewer is the leader of the pack, but also said it will be a different race when Rising rejoins in the fall.
  “We obviously have Cam Rising waiting in the wings once fall camp begins, so that’ll put a whole new spin on the quarterback competition, but right now, Charlie Brewer is performing better than anybody else,” Whittingham said.
  
  Not too surprising that Brewer leads right now considering the other four QBs (JQJ, Costelli, Justice, Barnes) are freshmen with no D1 game experience. But it is a good sign that he can come in and immediately look like THE guy.

  ahh, the annual rite of spring. Qb’s look good, Receivers are ready to prove they are the best in the country.,,
  
  5 minutes before the Weber State game we’ll finally have a starting QB named because it was such a tight battle all camp and we’ll spend all season wondering what is going on with all the receivers that were supposed to finally make the offense complete.
  
  we can pencil in March 15, 2022 to recycle the same comments with the names changed to protect the innocent.

  It’s always a good sign when Whitt is willing to give praise publicly about a particular player, CB in this case. But I think the possibility of CB being Bentley 2.0 is still very concerning, especially given the young talent we have in the QB room. If CB ends up being the guy and doesn’t deliver elite or above average QB play, it’s going to be a complete waste of a year. IMO, the way we have to look at CB is anything short of a conference championship is failure. Because a 9 or 10 win season comes at the expense of not developing our future QB1 who could’ve been a 3 or 4 year starter. Not to mention, having to completely start over again at QB in 2022 when our roster is loaded with experienced talent.

      Agreed. I’m just worried the “win now” approach might only net us 1 or 2 more wins this year at the expense of what we could do in 2022 and 2023 had we developed Rising, Jackson, or Costelli. I could live with an 8 win season this year going with one of our talented freshman, if it positioned us for a Conf Championship run in either/both 2022/2023. I just don’t see any 1 and done QB coming in, learning our new system, and leading us all the way to a PAC 12 title. But I absolutely hope I’m wrong!

        it’s always hard to speculate since at the end, the only thing to evaluate is what actually happened and there can’t be any parallel paths. No matter who starts this fall, we really won’t have data to show that a different player would have been the better option. The example that comes to mind is USC starting Max Browne instead of Darnold (2016?) for the first couple of games. In retrospect based on the rest of their careers, Darnold should have been the no-brainer choice but something leading up to it made the SC coaches think that Browne was the better way to go. As fans, we have to trust that Whit will make the best choice for both the 2021 and future seasons.
        
        College is such a narrow window and there are jobs hanging in the balance on these decisions. It’s not like MLB where a team can trade off all their high-priced talent and rebuild for a run 3-5 years down the road. Your scenario might (i emphasize might) be the best option for the future years but there is no guarantee that the team can win 8 games this year with Jackson or Costelli getting their first taste of the college game, let alone a potentially not 100% Rising. A 6-6 season with Brewer doing his best Cooper Bateman impression on the bench is also a possible outcome.
        
        I want Utah to win every game it plays but I’m not going to jump on the “we win the south/pac-12/rose bowl” bandwagon until some of these unknowns get sorted out. Right now I can come up with realistic projections of anywhere between 6 and 10 wins and don’t have enough answers to narrow that range.

        Great post. Very true, there is no way to accurately speculate each scenario. And at the end of the day, I completely agree with you…we have to trust that Whitt and Ludwig will make the best choice for us to win now and in the future.
        
        Personally, I place a premium on having a 3 year starting QB (in our system, not coming from somewhere else as a 3 year starter), given how much is riding on the QB position in order to compete at the highest of levels. If we’re being honest, we aren’t exactly known for being QB U. I’d argue, we’ve only seen “elite” QB play 3 times in the past 20 years (Alex Smith 2004, Brian Johnson 2008, Tyler Huntley 2019). For that reason, it seems to me that our best shot at getting elite QB play is through multi-year starting experience and continuity at QB.
