  I do not like the portal as it now stands. It is out of control.
  
  For football – I would give the players 4 months (January – April) to enter the portal. No portal from May 1 through the end of the year. A player could choose to go into the portal after a season ends through the end of spring practice. No portal changes in fall camp. This is too disruptive to the team and the coaching staff. A team could have four QBs going into fall camp. If three decide to leave because they aren’t starting, the team is screwed. This kind of thing has already happened and will happen much more IMO.
  
  In basketball, I would open the portal up in April and keep it open through June.
  
  Even in pro sports – free-agency is only open for limited periods. The portal is out of control IMO. Also, I would allow a player to change teams only once in the four-year period. If they graduate from a school, they could move a second time. I would also consider the possibility of losing your red-shirt year if you go to the portal.
  
  These are just un-vetted ideas. I feel like this portal thing has become a circus. It will not be going away, but it needs some boundaries IMO.

  Just wait until players start getting paid. The portal issues will pale in comparison to the challenges of player pay!

    The bottom line is, there will be few players getting paid. If EA pays each player for their name, it won’t be a ton of money. Star players in bigger markets may get some endorsement deals, but they’re going to be small. A tiny fraction of star players will get big deals from apparel companies, etc. It’s going to create a class system in college athletics, and it’s going to get really bad.

      Depends on where your school is located and how invested the local businesses and boosters are in your programs. Very few athletes will get big NLI deals, but at a school like Texas or Alabama, every starter will have at least a medium NLI deal.

  Do you have an exception for grad transfers? They currently have to use the Portal but their eligibility based on graduation won’t necessarily meet your date requirements.

  Will add, player pushes the Transfer Portal button he/she immediately loses all scholarship/financial aid support on the spot. Would love for these entitled college athletes to live the life of the average college student busting ass to pay for school, rent, living expenses while working when not in school or doing homework. Talk about an ungrateful bunch risking the loss of a free education because they’re unhappy not getting what they want on the field or court. Go Utes!

    The situation now is, the semester after they enter the portal, the school may revoke the scholarship.

  Way out of control. Let’s teach these kids that loyalty means nothing and you just bail when you don’t get what you want.
  I think there are LIMITED circumstances where the portal could be used, but aside from that, suck it up and play the hand your dealt.

    I feel like the Portal is doing it’s job and self-correcting on it’s own. Look at the number of kids who are still on there because they were not able to find other schools to take them on. That should eventually lead kids to make better decisions on whether to enter (as much as a 19-22 year old can be expected to make the best decisions for his future) but the novelty hasn’t quite worn off yet.
    
    There was a very real need for a mechanism such as the Portal to stop coaches from restricting transfers. It had become a joke because coaches would only let kids out of scholarships if they would agree to a list of places they could not transfer to. I felt like that was hypocrisy since those same coaches would accept another job at the drop of a hat and it didn’t matter to them if it was in the same conference, with a future opponent, etc. Something had to be done for the kids but the Law of Unintended Consequences prevails as it always has.
    
    The market has shown that players who sit on the bench at school X are not the hot commodities they believe they are. The Portal is great for the the Joe Burrow / Justin Fields types, even someone like Dalton Kincaid who was able to move up a level because it allows any school to initiate contact once your name is entered. At the same time, someone like Jaylon Dixon is pretty lucky that Utah was willing to take him back after he sat in the Portal for 6-8 months.

  I don’t like the portal either. I don’t like what it does to teams, and I don’t like what it teaches student-athletes about perseverance.
  
  HOWEVER…it seems totally hypocritical to not allow student-athletes to transfer freely when coaches can “transfer freely”. Why is a kid bound to a school while a coach is not? Why does a student-athlete get penalized for changing his/her situation while a coach gets rewarded for changing his/hers?
  
  So, I have a compromise: No portal for players except for after a coach leaves. Then a player can enter the portal and transfer anywhere without penalty. But if the coach the S-A committed to stays, then the player must stay, or stop playing.

    as a general rule, i’m okay with your compromise. I think you need to add a couple of exceptions:
    
    1) If the school is put on probation and the student transferring is not involved in the allegations (Mississippi as an example)
    
    2) Any student who is the target of harassment should also be allowed to move on without penalty. I hesitate to put that one in because not all reports of harassment are created equal, but there has to be an out. Harassment may not be the current en vogue term but I’m trying to come up with something that could apply to all student-athletes, not just those of color. Abuse seems too strong but at the same time, should an unsubstantiated report of someone in a crowd using the N word be grounds for transferring to one of the top 3 schools in the country that just happens to have an immediate need for that student (looking at you Justin Fields)?

    Because the player is a STUDENT athlete and and for the coach it is a job.
    The first part of that may be long gone.
