STANFORD, Calif. — — After seizing control of the race for the Pac-12 South title a week ago, Utah knows one small let up could open the competition back up again.

The Utes can take a big step toward locking up a spot in the Pac-12 title game next month in Las Vegas with a victory on Friday night at Stanford.

“The only thing that matters for us this week is trying to find a way to beat Stanford,” coach Kyle Whittingham said. “We don’t care where we are sitting in the standings and we certainly don’t focus on it. We know they are a good football team, they’ve beaten USC, Oregon, and they are a team that can play really good football. That’s really the nature of the Pac-12. … This conference is such that you got to be at your best every week or you’re going to get beat.”

Stanford could be without star quarterback Tanner McKee, who is listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury. McKee has been a big upgrade since he took over as starter in Week 2, throwing 14 TD passes and only five interceptions. Shaw said he will wait until the last possible minute for McKee to be cleared.

Time for the Utes to step up and take control. A convincing win (not to look over UofA or CU of course), makes a statement Utah is taking care of business separating themselves from the P12 piranha pond. Would love nothing more than to see Utah get a big win tonight and then ruin Oregon’s CFP hopes. Great opportunity to show the P12 Utah can compete as a front runner and slay one of KW’s demons as HC.

Hopefully the defense shows inprovement this week and the offense stays the course. Stanford is going to do everything they can to slow the run and sling it if McKee is a go. Get it done Utes!

Utah has historically been a match-up nightmare for Stanford. Since the Utes joined the PAC, they are 3-1 against Stanford.

      2013 – Utah 27 / Stanford 21 (Stanford Ranked 5th, upset game at home)

      2014 – Utah 20 / Stanford 17

      2017 – Stanford 23 / Utah 20

      2018 – Utah 40 / Stanford 21

Each game, with the exception of the 2018 game, has been close with the Utes finding a way to pull out the victory. Even though Stanford is down this year, they could still ruin the Utes path to winning the South. But because we tend to be a match-up nightmare for Stanford, the Utes have a good shot at winning this game by a close margin as history has dictated.

ah yes, 2017. the year Moss was running wild and with a 3 point lead in the 3rd quarter, Taylor inexplicably refused to call another run play for the rest of the game.
